Biography

Elvira Frances Huddleston is the daughter of William Berry Huddleston (abt.1794-1868) and Mary Jane (Howard) Huddleston (abt.1806-aft.1880) [1].

The youngest Huddleston daughter, Frances (about Feb 1841 - 21 Jan 1926), has perhaps the most interesting twist of name possibilities, her "Frances" having been mixed at times with those of Mary and Sarah and with "Elvira" at least once (by Ancestry member notation) being supposed as a nickname. Appearing in 1850 as Frances Huddleston (9) in the same census with sisters, Jane (21), Catherine (17) and Sarah (15), it is safe to assume her name included none of those claimed by her sisters, including Mary which has been established as belonging to Mary Jane. The original 1860 Census image reveals handwriting that is unclear, but suggests her name as Sarah F.. One Ancestry member has contributed the name Sarah Frances, although sister, Sarah, was married and out of the parental home by 1858. In 1870-1880-1900, she appears only as Frances Moore, wife of A. John, Gus and A. J. M. Moore. In both 1910 and 1920, she is clearly recorded as ELVIRA F. MOORE with husband Augustus J. M. Moore. Death and burial data in the Prospect Congregational Methodist Cemetery in Randolph County is for Frances Moore and Frances H. Moore. Whether or not Elvira was a given name or nickname, it is clearly assigned to her in 1910 and 1920. Coupled with 1850 Census knowledge that her sisters were Jane, Catherine and Sarah, it is reasonable to assume her name was ELVIRA FRANCES, appearing in that order.
