Biography

Richard Hudson, son of Richard Hudson and an unknown mother, was born in Accomack County, Virginia, about 1634, and died October 25, 1669 in Roxdale, Henrico County, Virginia.[1] He was christened on 1 July 1634 in Accomack.[citation needed] He was the first Hudson to be born in America.

He married Mary Bowman in 1658 in Accomack, Virginia.[citation needed]

Richard was alienated from his father who was away at sea for various lengths of time, and after his mother died, Richard was apparently indentured into the care and control of James Bruce.[citation needed]

After his servitude ended, he embarked upon his own personal fortune. In 1652, he joined a group of people traveling westward into Henrico County and mainland Virginia.[citation needed] There he settled among the Bowman families on land lying in a bend on the south side of the James River.

Existing Henrico County records indicate Richard Hudson II received, from his father-in-law Bowman, father of his wife Mary Bowman, a gift of land known as "Roxdale."[2] The above mentioned records are also referred to in the Will of Richard Hudson II, made October 25, 1669, whereby the land known as "Roxdale" was divided between his three minor sons. [citation needed] Court records show [WHEN?] a guardianship administered to Thomas Pauldon for his minor sons, indicating Richard and his wife, Mary, died leaving very young children, not much else is known about their death.[3]

The will no longer exists, due to buildings burning during the Civil War. Part of its contents, however, can be reconstructed from a deed made 1 Dec 1688. On that date, Richard, the son and heir of Richard Hudson, deceased, late of Roxdale in Henrico Co, stated that by his father's will of 25 Oct 1669 he and his two brothers, Robert and William Hudson, were devised a plantation at Roxdale then in the possession of Thomas Poland. It was the land which his father Richard Hudson, Sr had been given by his father in law Bowman. The land has escheated to the crown and had been granted to the three brothers.[citation needed]

For 1600 pounds of tobacco Richard Hudson sold his share to his brother Robert Hudson. The witnesses to the deed were Thomas Cocke and William Cocke, Jr. Mary Hudson, wife of Richard Hudson, relinquished her dower. Three sons of Richard II and Mary Hudson; Richard Hudson III 1660, Henrico Co, VA, Robert Hudson 1662, Henrico Co., VA, William Hudson Aug 1668, Henrico Co., VA.[4]

Hudson-12427 and Hudson-220 appear to represent the same person because: All details match

I am currently reviewing unindexed sources in Family Search and Virginia Chancery Records in an effort to compile additional primary sources for the Hudson family. I would like to see any merges delayed. I just started this research but what I have located to date can be seen Hudson Sources.

The proposed merge of Hudson-12427 into this profile does seem to be a clear match -- any reason not to go ahead and complete that merge now? You can always add additional primary sources to this primary profile after the merge.

I agree they do appear to be the same person but the children on Hudson-12427 do not look right. The biography for Richard III (Hudson-14382), attached to Hudson-12427 as a son, states he is the son of Robert Hudson and Mary Margaret Ferguson. Robert (Hudson-12426), attached to Hudson 12427 as a son, was married to Mary Margaret Ferguson. There may also be some confusion on the children of the next generation.

Hudson-220 has a son named Robert Hudson (Hudson-752) attached but he was married to Mary Powland and there is no mention on his profile of a second wife.

It seems like we need to detach Joane Tillghman as a mother. The profile says his mother's identity is unknown, and her profile says she died in England while his says he was born in Virginia. Is there anyone who objects to detaching this mother from the profile?

I am not seeing any primary evidence of his POB. Researchers may be evenly split as to whether he was born in England or the Colony? The fact that his father was a mariner does not preclude that Joane traveled to the Colony later returning to England prior her death. "There is speculation among researchers that Richard was married to a woman with the last name of Tilghman while still in England and either divorced his wife or she was deceased upon his departure. It is also commonly believed that at least two of his children possibly remained in England under the care of relatives, these two children being Henry and Richard previously referred to as Richard II, or Richard the husband of Mary Bowman" -http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~formyfamily/genealogy/Hudson/hudsonfampage2.htmhttp://freepages.rootsweb.com/~formyfamily/genealogy/Hudson/hudsonfampage2.htm

Good point about the POB. Where did that claim that he was born in Virginia come from? Should we edit the bio to reflect this uncertainty?

Also, I was not able to follow the link to this Rootsweb site. Is that a subscription only or restricted access link?

The claim was made by family researcher Rhonda Chesser Porter (a cousin of mine) and can be found at https://www.thedomesticcurator.com/2013/12/hudson-genealogy-from-rudolph-to.html. The link you are having trouble with is http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~formyfamily/genealogy/Hudson/hudsonfampage2.htm

Got it. Porter's page seems well-researched, but unfortunately she does not cite any of her sources. She claims that Richard's mother was Mary Hayes. It looks from Mary and Richard Sr.'s profiles that the sole source cited for the claim that they married in 1638 is the Ancestry "One World Tree" database, which does not exist anymore, but was just a compilation of user-submitted trees. So this is not a reliable source on its own. Is there any other more reliable source for the claim that he married Mary Hayes in 1638?
posted by Scott McClain
Is there a dispute as to the identity of his mother? The bio says it was Mary Hayes but that relationship was recently detached and he is now attached to Tillghman. Which is correct?
posted by Scott McClain
His father did not marry Hayes until 1638, approximately 4 years after the birth.

Cleaning up merge issues ...

Replaced multiple gedcom duplicates to source/acknowledgement.

Any volunteers for the other "details that need some work.

This biography appears to not been properly cleaned following a merge. There also appear to be details that need some work.

Given that there are age issues with his children, I think that the Notes Section should be moved to a Space page where these issues could handled and links could be made on the profiles mentioned. Having all the facts in one place might make solving the issues easier. I could start it but would desire help in the research area and other collaborations from the project.
