Biography

Anne Herdson was born about 1540. She was the daughter of Henry Herdson [1] and Barbara Watson. [2]

She married firstly, in about 1555, Thomas Sexton, merchant, of London. [3][4]

She married secondly, on 14 November 1559 at St Dunstan's in the East, George Stoddard of London. [5][1][6]

Thirdly she married John Barker, MP of Suffolk. [1] She was John's second wife.[6]

Anne died in 1610 and was buried on 25 August 1610 at St Dunstan in the East, City of London, England.[7]

Her will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 28 August 1610.[8]

Research Notes

  • The National Archives has estimated the year of Edward Watson's letter to his niece Anne Herdson (apologising for non-attendance at her wedding to Thomas Sexton) as 1561.[3] In fact, this marriage must have taken place in 1555 (or earlier), as Thomas Sexton is mentioned in her father's will,[4] and Anne is not, strongly implying they were already married. Donnelly-2171 05:38, 4 December 2022 (UTC)

A record of marriage is noted to a Thomas Sexton.[9]

It is recorded that Henry Herdson (Hudson) of Muscovy Company fame, made a visit to London in 1658, also a record of Anne, the daughter of Henry Herdson, of London, who married a George Stodard, of London. Anne naturally bore the arms of her father, which were: Argent, a cross Sable between four Fleurs-de-lis Gules (BGA, 1889: 481).[10]

Hudson-1141 and Herdson-9 are not ready to be merged because: Postponed because I cannot see the evidence that makes these the same person

Does your question mean you are not able to access for example History of Parliament Online? I am not sure what you cannot access? Can you access https://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1558-1603/member/barker-john-i-1532-89  ?

Barker, John I (1532-89) of Ipswich, Suff "Family and Education b. c.1532, 1st s. of Robert Barker I by his ?1st w., da. of one King (or Kempe) of Suff. m. (1) Willamina, da. and h. of John Bomart of Brabant, 3s. inc. Robert 2da.; (2) Anne, da. of Henry Herdson, alderman of London, wid. of George Stoddart of London, prob. s.p. suc. fa. 1571.1"

  • John I Barker is Barker-14792.
  • Anne Herdson-9 is "widow of George Stoddart of London" and "daughter of Henry Herdson of London".
  • George Stoddard is Stoddard-2901, George Stoddard of London and Mottingham, Kent.
  • Henry Herdson is Henry Hudson-785.

Per the pedigree referenced in the profile here (The visitation of London in the year 1568.) George Stoddard of London married Anne Herdson of London, daughter of Henry Herdson of London and Anne married John Barker-14792 (John is reference here: https://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1558-1603/member/barker-john-i-1532-89.) and Anne is noted as widow of George Stoddard. Further note that Anne's daughter Judith (listed here in this profile Anne Herdson-9) is a daughter of George Stoddard and Anne Herdson.

Note under the profile of Henry Hudson-785 that he is also known as Henry Herdson, Sr. He has a daughter Anne who marries George Stoddard of London. Please also see this reference regarding disambiguation of the name Henry Hudson and Henry Herdson page 29-30 in "A historical inquiry concerning Henry Hudson, his friends, relatives and early life, his connection with the Muscovy company and discovery of Delaware Bay by Read, John Meredith, 1837-1896; Historical Society of Delaware; Making of America Project." https://archive.org/details/inquiryconcern00readrich/page/28/mode/2up

Thank you.

Hudson-1141 and Herdson-9 appear to represent the same person because: Both represent Anne Herdson, daughter of Henry Herdson, Alderman of London, and Barbara Watson. She married three times: 1) Thomas Sexton 2) George Stoddard and 3) John Barker. Herdson is the spelling used in the contemporary sources cited on the profile.

Herdson-9 and Hudson-1141 appear to represent the same person because: Her father Henry Hudson, Alderman of London was also known as Herdson. Please see the reference added History of Parliament online.
