Anna Hospital was a mental and physical health institution. I suspect that Jasper was there due to a drinking problem (or the mental illness for which the drinking was a symptom) based on family stories. However, I did see that there were some convicts at Anna who worked on the groups as well as convicts who were also patients. I do know that Jasper is buried in the hospital grounds. It looks like his mother might be buried in there as well. If we have the right person, she might have died of consumption there. Based on looking at the census from 1930, I'm pretty sure that Jasper was institutionalized patient and not a convict.

Andrew Jasper Hudson was born to William Hudson and Mary Magdaline Walden Hudson. Mary's mother was a McCauley, and the McCauleys had a good amount of land in Richland and Clay Counties. One of their cousins was the first white settler in what became Clay County, Illinois.

When William Hudson died in the 1870s (it is not certain when he died or where), his wife, Mary Magdaline Walden Hudson, lived with her mother, Margaret Ann McCauley Fields, along with Jasper and his older sister, Marg. Jasper's brothers William Halleck and George were being raised by the McCauley relatives in Decker Township, Richland County, Illinois. I suspect that as Jasper got older, he was over there as well. In newspaper clippings of the 1890s, you will see references to William, George, and Jasper Hudson as well as their McCauley relatives.

Fun fact - William Halleck's second wife (Alta) and Jasper's wife (Susie) were first cousins through their mothers (both mothers were Thomases descended from George Washington Thomas and Rhoda Poff).

Jasper was in the Anna, IL hospital by 1830, according to the census. He passed away in 1935. His wife, Susie, married Kie Michels and moved to California.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Andrew by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Andrew:

Judy - my great-grandfather was Jasper's older brother, William Halleck Hudson. We knew that Jasper died at Anna and had been there for a while, but wasn't he there as a patient of the psychiatric hospital? Thank you!
