Alfred/Alford/Allen is likely the older brother or uncle of John Crockett Hudson. His parents are a mystery and information has not been located. In a letter written from Crockett to Alfred, Crockett addresses him as "Uncle," but another family source indicates they are cousins. The true relationship is unknown. [1]
Census record [2] indicates only 16 years difference in age, and no mother is listed. The record indicates the following people:
Alford Hutson-28 (birthplace TN)
Sarah Hutson-63 (born about 1787 in South Carolina, most likely his mother)
Home in 1860: 10th Civil District, Rutherford, Tennessee, United States[3]
A M Hutson, Male, 37, Tennessee
S Hutson, Female, 72, South Carolina
P Hutson, Female, 30, Tennessee
E Hutson, Female, 25, Tennessee
C Hutson, Male, 22, Tennessee
1870 Census lists him as: Alfred Hutson, age 47; Polly Hutson (sister) age 38; Emeline Hutson (sister) age 34; Albert Henry Hutson (son) age 14; Elizabeth Hutson (daughter) age 11. [4]
The 1900 census has him listed as Allen M. Hudson. [5] Family records indicate he changed his name sometime in the mid 1800's, from Alfred Moore Hudson, to Allen M. Hudson; it is not known why, or if this was done legally or not. [1]

Thanks Robin! I have most of those, just haven't posted yet. I just got a huge packet of info from my Smotherman cousin, with TONS of new information, including a letter from Crockett to Alford...and a note that Alford changed his name to Allen! Interesting stuff!
If you think all three of the census records are the same person, then he never married, and Mary was his sister....so, he was probably the big brother of John Crockett. But, more importantly....the last census shows the parents were born in South Carolina....big hint if this is true....
