Marsena Huff was born in Rockingham County, Virginia, in 1813, daughter of John and Sarah Koontz Huff. She was called "Sena" (sometimes spelled "Cena") and being an unusual name, it was badly corrupted by clerks who found it confusing and by people who could not read cursive. "Sena" became "Lena" in the marriage record[1] and "Cena" became "Cora" in the deed record in which she sold her interest in her grandfather's land.[2]
Marsena and Zebedee were living in Guernsey County, Ohio, in 1849 when they sold her interest in the Koontz farm land, but by the time the 1850 census was made, they were living about 30 miles further south in Washington County, Ohio.[3] Marsena was a widow by 1860.[4] She is listed in the 1870 census as "Cena Kendle," age 56, born in Virginia.[5]
