He was said to have been born on an island near Huff's Ferry, which was on the Tennessee River near Loudon, Tennessee.
He married Louvina Kear (2 June 1808 Rutherford County, North Carolina - 30 Jun 1901 Glover, Iron County, Missouri), daughter of James Kear, Sr. and Molly (Shelton) Kear. They lived in Madison County, Missouri and Iron County, Missouri, and apparently in Fort Bend County, Texas, for some period prior to 1850.
