Biography

1776 Project
Private John Huff served with Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.

John Huff was born in 1763 (undocumented information said it was on 8 Feb). According to his military pension application, he was born in Halifax County, Virginia (possibly in a part of Halifax County that fell into Pittsylvania County when it was formed in 1767, only a few years after John's birth). Previously, John's WikiTree profile, in agreement with a previous version of his Find A Grave profile (as of Oct 2019), indicated his place of birth to have been Berks County, Pennsylvania. However, Halifax County, Virginia as his place of birth was specified in his Revolutionary War pension application taken under oath (a transcription of which is included in this profile), while the Berks County, Pennsylvania place of birth appears to have been a guess or based on family legend. However, it may be a clue as to a possible origin of Johns' parents or other ancestors.

So far as has presently been identified, there appears to be no source (other than some individuals' family trees) for a middle initial "B." as was previously indicated in this profile, nor any other middle initial or name. It's possible that the "B." was merely assumed, since John had a son named John. In such instances, where there is an older and younger person of the same name in the same vicinity (even regardless of actual familial relationship), a number of other Huffs appear to have recorded the older with a middle initial "A." (or no initial) and the younger with a middle initial"B." A primary source of documentation would be appreciated if there is one that indicated a middle initial or middle name.

Marriages

John had three marriages:

  1. Mary "Polly" Gearhart, 14 Jul 1786 marriage bond, Franklin County, Virginia, with William Kelley as surety. (Note: this is the date and place of the marriage bond; the date of marriage was not specified.) The minister was Robert Jones.[1][2]
  2. Mary "Polly" W. Wade, 16 Mar 1830 marriage bond, Franklin County, Virginia (this is the date and place of the marriage bond, not the marriage itself)[3][4]
  3. Elizabeth "Betsy" Guilliams aka Ferguson, married 9 Feb 1837, Franklin County, Virginia.[5] and said to have been married by Rev. Michael Howery, who was ordained in 1828 at the Pine Creek Primitive Baptist Church, Floyd County, Virginia (as of 1828, this location was still part of Montgomery County, with Floyd County being formed in 1831). Elizabeth's parents were James Ferguson and Nancy "Polly" Guilliams (an unmarried long-time cohabitation relationship).

Children

Please Note: The listing of children with Mary "Polly" (Gearhart) Huff is tentative, especially the first several listed, and just a rough draft. It has not been authoritatively sourced and for the most part has merely been pieced together from family trees such as user submitted trees in Ancestry, which are not considered reliable or suitable sources for citing for the purposes of WikiTree. If you have primary or authoritative sources, please contribute! Adding what you may have as inline references would be awesome!

Possible children with Mary "Polly" (Gearhart) Huff (all need additional investigation, etc.):

  1. Mary "Polly" Huff (c 1787 -  )[6]
  2. Samuel Huff (c 1790 - )[7]
  3. Peter Huff (1 Aug 1791 - Aug 1842)
  4. Susannah "Susan" Huff (31 Oct 1792 - 31 Oct 1853) following a marriage bond dated 1 Mar 1808, recorded in Franklin County, Virginia (Franklin County was founded in 1785 from parts of Bedford and Henry counties), married Jacob Snider[8]
  5. Hannah Huff (c 1795 - 24 Jan 1851). Married John Snuffer (c 1786 - 1851).
  6. Jacob Huff, twin (24 Jul 1795 - aft 1870 )
  7. Isaac Huff, twin (24 Jul 1795 - 26 Aug 1872)
  8. John Huff (5 Jan 1801 - 9 Mar 1891)

Children with Mary "Polly" (Wade) Huff:

none

Children with Elizabeth (Guilliams aka Ferguson) Huff Payne:

  1. James Henry Huff, may have gone by Henry Huff, as indicated by his marriage record (17 May 1838 Franklin County, Virginia -   ). Married Letitia Johnson Overton [apparently Letitia (Johnson) Huff Overton?].[9] There is a marriage record of Letitia Johnson, age 13, born about 1846, to Henry James Huff (rather than James Henry Huff) on 3 March 1859 in Raleigh County, Virginia, later West Virginia, solemnized by C. Curtis.[10]
  2. Ferdinand Huff (17 Dec 1839 Franklin County, Virginia - 26 Jun 1865 Point Lookout, St. Mary's County, Maryland)[11] [12] Note: James and Ferdinand were residing in the household of their grandparents (who apparently had a long-time cohabitation without marriage?), James Fergison, age 73, and Nancy Guilliams, age 60, in Jacksonville, Floyd County, Virginia in 1850.[13]

Chronology (Tax, Census, Land or Other Records)

1786 Franklin County, Virginia, one John Hoff and one Peter Hoff were on the Personal Property Tax List [14]

NOTES: In Floyd County VA on 9 Feb 1859 Sparrel Griffith, guardian of James Henry and Ferdinand Huff, applied for bounty land on their behalf as minor children and orphans of John and Elizabeth Huff. His application states that John Huff married Elizabeth Guilliams in Franklin County on 9 Feb 1837, and that he died at home on 10 May 1840. It further states that John Huff’s widow married Stephen A. Payne and moved to Athens County, OH and died 21 Oct 1850. The application was supported by an affidavit by Isaac Huff, age 64 and one of John Huff’s children by his first of three wives, giving the dates of birth of James Henry Huff as 17 May 1838 and of Ferdinand Huff as 17 Dec 1839. The file includes a copy of a bond signed in Franklin County on 1 Feb 1837 by John Huff and James Ferguson for the marriage of Huff to Elizabeth Guilliams of Floyd County. [20][21]

DNA Testing

John has been identified by Y-DNA testing (67 markers) of a male descendant as in haplogroup Q-M242, and among those related to or descended from Paulus Dirksen (abt.1620-bef.1692) [23] who came from Holland to New Netherland in 1650. Paulus' son was Dirk Pauluszen[24] Both of their surnames--Dirksen and Pauluszen--were patronymic names based on the given name of the father. It was Dirk who assumed the fixed surname Hoff around 1700, in compliance with English requirements. Both given and surnames may also be seen with numerous spelling variations.

A descendant who tested in 2009 is not a WikiTree participant, has not been able to be reached, and may now be deceased. See Group 02 in the FTDNA.com Hough Project[25] Kit No. 165151. A close match with another Hough Project member at Genetic Distance 0 who took a Y-DNA111 test and several others who were tested and appear at Genetic Distances of 1 and 2, showed a Terminal SNP of YP730.

Among the more contemporaneous to John family relationships the Y-DNA results show that John was related--in some way--to the nearby Huff families of what has been referred to as near Bent Mountain (not to be confused with the present-day community of Bent Mountain in Roanoke County, which started to be populated after the Civil War). The area where other Huffs were settled may also be seen referred to as Little River or head of Little River area. This is an area that currently is located in the Copper Hill community in Floyd County, Virginia. In the early years (from, say, the 1760s on) of settlement of this part of southwest Virginia, this particular area was, over time as new counties were formed, a part of several other different counties.

Who Were John's Parents?

John's parentage remains undetermined, although a number of conjectures or interpretations of family legends have been presented over the years. Some of these include:

Peter HUFF (c 1730/60 ‑ possibly the Peter Huff killed on Huff Creek, present day Wyoming County, West Virginia, in the 1780s).... "There is a tradition among descendants of John HUFF, a Revolutionary War Soldier and pensioner of Franklin Co, VA, that Peter was son of immigrants John and Hannah HOUGH from Germany to Berks Co, PA. They say Peter married Mary TONEY and moved into the area east of the Blue Ridge Mountains and that one of his sons was John, the Revolutionary War soldier who later lived in Franklin Co."[26]
"Descendants say John was born near Huff’s Church (location unknown but some have surmised to be in Berks Co, PA, but spent most of his youth near Turner Creek and Pigg River in present Patrick Co. [Virginia]. This is probably the best definition of where his parents lived."[27]
"John Huff, a soldier in the Revolutionary War, was born about 1763 near 'Huff's Church' in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, probably in that portion which became Franklin County in 1786. He spent most of his life in the vicinity of Turner's Creek and Pigg River in Franklin County at the foot of the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The names of his parents have not been determined. According to tradition, John Huff's parents came to the New World about 1749 from the Palatinate section of Germany. They embarked from the Port of Rotterdam in Holland and landed in Philadelphia harbor. On arrival in the United States, they settled in Berks County, Pennsylvania. They later came to Virginia with other Pennsylvania German families, the Heckmans, Gearhearts, Sniders, Snuffers, and others."[28]
Parents [of John Huff per earlier version of his Find a Grave Memorial that had errors]: John Huff (1716 – 1776) and Elizabeth [sic] Mary Toney Huff (1720 – unknown). "John and Mary Tony Huff emigrated [from] England [sic, another source somewhere said Wales or England and likely neither were correct], 1750, settled at High Peak, just over county lines of Floyd County. Five children: John B.[sic?] Huff born Feb. 8, 1763. Amos Huff, Daniel Huff, George Huff, Samuel Huff" [YOBs and order of birth not specified but if they indeed existed, births may have been after 1763?].
It was alleged that Peter Huff's brother (or other relative?) named John Huff married the widow Mary (Toney) Huff, following Peter's death. Source unknown.
Note: Berks County, Pennsylvania, was created on 11 Mar 1752, from parts of Philadelphia, Chester, and Lancaster counties. If, say, it was John's father who was born (or lived) in Berks County, likely that birth would have occurred when the area was a part of a predecessor county.

  6. Of interest but unlikely to have been this Mary (the daughter of John Huff) since she would not yet have been of marrying age, there was a marriage 7 Apr 1793 of one Mary Huff, daughter of Mary Hoff (the two Marys surnames spelled Huff and Hoff in the record), to Griffith Dickerson, son of Obediah Dickerson. However, Mary (Huff) Dickerson could plausibly have been a sister of John Huff (and thus also plausibly an aunt of this Mary "Polly" Huff, daughter of John Huff.
  7. If a son Samuel existed, maybe he was the Samuel Huff who married Rachel Hays? This seems plausible but would require significant persuasive evidence. That Samuel is currently set as a son of Leonard Huff of the various Huffs near Bent Mountain. Alternatively, there was a Samuel who moved to or was associated with Pulaski County, Virginia. However, a link as to him being a son of John does not appear to have been established.

  11. The Ferdinand buried in the Confederate cemetery was not identified as to date or year of birth, and may not be this Ferdinand. However, military record indicated he was raised for service in the Civil War in Floyd County, Virginia. It appears that one of John's sons may also have had a son named Ferdinand. Also possible was that John's son Ferdinand was raised by or residing with his older brother and there may not have been two Ferdinand Huffs after all. Additional investigation needed.

Huff-2652 and Huff-2512 appear to represent the same person because: These are clearly the same John Huff Sr - same birth date/location.
