Biography

Green B. HUFF (1790 Virginia - after 1860 Talbot Co, Georgia) has been indicated by researchers to be son of Lewis and Sally (GREEN) HUFF, and that he settled with two brothers, Donaldson and Lewis, in Talbot Co, GA, on the Flint River near Double Bridges. This remains to be verified. On a few occasions, he was recorded as HOUGH. Certainly Green and Donaldson first settled in Hancock Co, GA, and married there.

Green HUFF on 12 Feb 1818 in Hancock Co, GA, md (1) Martha LOCKHART[1], but she was not the person listed with Green on the 1850 and 1860 censuses.

Children with Green in 1850 were:

  1. Lewis (1822 GA - ). This was most likely Lewis J. HUFF (Aug 1822 GA - 21 Aug 1902 TX) who md c 1850 Mary J. ??? (Oct 1832 GA - after 1902 TX), and moved to TX soon after his marriage. He served in the Confederate Army in TX and later drew a pension. He and Mary J had ch to incl: John; James R.; Lulu; Alexander; Mack W.; William; Columbus Augustus; Mary B.; and Frances. They lived near the TX/LA border in Van Zandt and Cass counties.
  2. John H. (1832 GA - 27 Sep 1872 Union Spring, Alabama) married Martha McDonald (1836 GA - )
  3. Joseph (1836 GA - )
  4. Ellen (1838 GA - )
  5. Richard (1837 GA - ) may have been in Rapides Parish, LA, in 1880, but the identity is not certain. This was Richard D. HUFF (1838 GA) who on 6 Apr 1857 in Rapides Parish, LA, md Nancy E. SNELLING (1848 LA - ), and ch in 1880 were George L.; Emma; William; and Edmond. Where Richard went later is not known.

By 1837, Green HUFF was in Talbot Co, and there he remained.

On 12 FEB 1848 Green md (2) Elizabeth Lockhart?? (1798 GA - 1889).

Other ch not known.

In 1860, Green and Elizabeth were alone as farmers in the 886th Dist and were moderately well off. The other HUFF families in the county do not seem to be their ch. G. HUFF's place in Talbot Co was the site for the marriage of E. T. TISINGER and Josephine E. PRICHARD on 9 Oct 1859. (Southern Christian Advocate; Marriage and Death Notices, 1837-1867.) It is not known what relationship G. HUFF had to this couple, but one could be a grandchild.

Huff lineage is believed to be Green and two wives of VA and GA; Lewis and Sallie (Green) of Brunswick Co, VA; Daniel and Mary ( ) of Brunswick Co, VA;
