Biography

Philemon HUFF (c 1763 VA - 9 Nov 1843 Greenville Co, SC) may have been the person listed as Phillip HUFF who contributed a gun worth 2 pounds to the militia which joined General GREEN . The gun was impressed by Capt James MARSHALL. This entry would be doubtful because of Philemon's age, but no other record has been found for a Phillip HUFF in Brunswick Co. More research is needed to determine the identity of Phillip HUFF.

About 1784 prob in VA, Philemon md Martha PARHAM (1862 VA - after 1850 Greenville Co, SC) dau of . They lived in Brunswick Co, VA, and Greenville Co, SC.

Philemon settled on the Saluda River at Piedmont by 1810. Descendants still live on this land. The 1820 Census for Greenville, North Carolina, records Philemon Huff residing next to James Huff and also William Payne, Jr.[1]

  1. Hardaway (c 1785 VA - c 1840 Cherokee Co, AL, bur Shepard Cem, near Huff's Gap) md Susan TOWNS (1790 VA - 1830/40 SC or AL) and lived in SC and AL. Ch incl William H.; Edna (Mrs. George W. HARPER); Sarah (Mrs. Richard SIMMONS); Phillip; and Thomas Jefferson. All except William H. moved on to Jasper, Smith, and Jones counties of MS.
  2. Mary H. (23 Jan 1786 VA - 1829/33 Greenville Co, SC) md William PAYNE (1782 Orange Co, NC - Jul 1863), son of Archibald and Mary PAYNE, as his first wife. They may have had 6 daus and three sons: Martha (Mrs. Samuel PAYNE); James Huff; son J. W.; Isaac; Tabitha JENKINS; Mary GAMBRELL; Nellie JONES; Elizabeth; and Susan Jane (Mrs. Simeon ESKEW). After Mary H. died, William md (2) Ann STANCELL (1802/1803 SC - ) and had 5 daus: Frances (Mrs. Samuel COX; Moriah ((Mrs Madden GAMBRELL); Sarah DAVIS; Georgiana STEVENS; and Rebecca Lou NEECE. This family lived on the Saluda River next to Avray HUFF in Greenville Co, SC, near Piedmont.
  3. Tabitha (1789 VA - 1873 Greenville Co, SC) Unm. She lived with relatives. On 6 Aug 1874 and 5 Sep 1874, Avray HUFF wrote letters to his nephew, James Huff PAYNE, regarding the estate of his deceased sister (not named). He mentioned cousin Nelly TURNER in one letter; and in the other, he stated that Samuel MOSLEY had on 3 Sep 1874 md Martha COOPER. (Samuel was his grandchild.) He also mentioned William RICHARDSON, Parham ???, and J. W. ???
  4. Avery (1793 VA - after 1880 Pickens Co, AL) on 21 May 1818 in Pendleton Co, SC, md Mary T. TAGGART (1796 SC - before 1872 AL) and lived in Greenville Co, SC, and Pickens Co, AL. Ch incl Parham G.; Hannah; Lemuel; John B.; William A.; Philemon (or Phillip); Nancy; and Benjamin C. Avary served in the War of 1812.
  5. William (2 April 1801 VA - ). no info.


The obituary note for Philemon HUFF indicated he had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for 40 years.

Lineage is Philemon and Martha (Parham) Huff of VA and SC; Daniel and Mary ( ) Huff of Brunswick Co, VA;
