Biography

James Huff (abt 1783 Northumberland County, Pennsylvania - 30 SEP 1855 Flemington, Clinton, Pennsylvania was the child of Edmund Huff and Nancy Jones. James is identified as son of Edmund Huff in the Grattius vs. Tottenham lawsuit.

About 1816 James married Susannah ____. Her maiden name is believed to be Hepburn based on naming patterns of their children but this is unsourced. There were two Hepburn brothers living in the Williamsport area - William and James. William Hepburn bought a track of land belonging to Edmund Huff in 1789 at a Sheriff's sale to satisfy a debt. This track was on the west side of Lycoming Creek and adjoined lands of "John Sutton and Mary Kempleton".

Children Mentioned in Will dated 6 Sept 1855:

  1. William H Huff (1817-1900) married Susan McCormick
  2. Nancy Huff (1830-1886) married Harmon Starn (1812-1881)
  3. James Hepburn Huff (1837 - 16 Nov 1883 Buttonwood, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania[1]) married Sarah Ann Danley (1843-1903)
  4. Susan Paulina/Pelina (1843-

Some family trees indicate that he had another son, Charles Huff , born ca. 1810 in either PA or NJ but this is doubtful. Paternal descendants have Q-M242 Y-DNA results.

Burial[2]: Brown Cemetery. Mill Hall, Clinton County, Pennsylvania. MEMORIAL ID 93643166. Inscription reads, "Our Father, James Huff". Date is not legible as gravestone is partially buried. The person who created the memorial says it is 10 Oct 1853 but this is not confirmed and is two years prior to probate which seems too early. His wife Susannah H. Huff is buried in the same cemetery but again the date cannot be read.

Probate Record:

  • 26 Sep 1855, Clinton, PA. James Huff of Flemington, Clinton County, PA. Mentions son William, daughter Nancy married to Harmon Starn, son James Hepburn, Susan Pelina.
