Note of Caution This Phillip Huff is not the same Philip Huff as https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Huff-126.

In the past, these two Phil(l)ips have sometimes been combined as though they were one person--including, apparently, a successful past DAR application based on a mix-up of Phil(l)ips. Descendants' Y-DNA results confirm that they were two different individuals. For additional detail, please see the Comments section below regarding the actual Y-DNA results which show that it is virtually impossible for this Philip to have been the same person as the Philip Huff at Huff-126.

Biography

Phillip HUFF (c 1785 Wayne County, Kentucky or VA - 8 Mar 1857 Wayne Co, KY) was a farmer and day laborer all his life. His place of birth is uncertain; his Kentucky death index listing indicated him to have been born in Wayne County, Kentucky, but the 1850 census showed him as being born in Virginia. If he was born in what became Wayne County, Kentucky, it would likely have been in a county (or state) before it became Wayne County, since Wayne County was created in 1800 from parts of Pulaski (Pulaski County was created 10 Dec 1798 from Lincoln and Green counties; Lincoln County was formed in 1789, which had been formed from Kentucky County, Virginia, which had been established in 1776) and Cumberland counties (Cumberland County was created 14 Dec 1798 from Green County; Green County founded in 1793 from Lincoln--formed from Kentucky County, Virginia in 1776--and Nelson counties--created 18 Oct 1784 from Jefferson County, originally Jefferson County, Virginia founded in 1780),

There were several other HUFF families in KY, some being children or grandchildren of Philip Huff and Rachel (Unknown) Huff of Loudoun County and Montgomery County of VA. The Phillip of this profile has sometimes been alleged to have been a part of the Philip and Rachel Huff descendants group. However, descendants of this Phillip and descendants of Philip and Rachel are of two different Y-DNA haplogroups and thus were unrelated genetically in the male line.

Some time after 1810, Phillip md Hannah Spencer (1785 VA - d before 1857 Wayne Co, KY), parents not known. It has been assumed she was the only wife Phillip had, but this must be verified. They were alone in 1850, and were so poor they left no will or possessions. Marriage records of Wayne Co, KY, suggest some of their children.

According to a Kentucky death index, Phillip was a farmer, born in Wayne County and died on 8 Mar 1837 in Wayne County, Kentucky. His parent were unknown (no information; there was just a line where parents' names would have been indicated).[1] Phillip HUFF has been said to have died in the home of his daughter, Miinerva Jane (HUFF) (1831-1916) and spouse, Samuel HENSLEY, who lived on Beaver Creek in Wayne County.

Apparent or Possible Children

  • 1. Elizabeth HUFF (c 1812 KY - ) on 3 Nov 1831 in Wayne Co, KY, md Benjamin DENTON with Phillip HUFF as surety. They lived in Wayne Co and had at least seven ch. Benjamin was son of Isaac DENTON, who was a neighbor to Phillip.
  • 2. Minerva Jane HUFF (1831-1916) md Samuel HENSLEY and lived on Beaver Creek in Wayne Co. Phillip HUFF died in their home in 1857.
  • 3. Sarah Catherine HUFF or Hufft (1 Oct 1822 Wayne Co, KY - 1880 Pulaski Co, KY) as Catherine HUFFT on 29 July 1847 in Wayne Co, KY, md as second wife to William Wallace WADDLE (30 Aug 1821 TN/NC - 29 July 18??, with John B. WADDLE and Phillip HUFFT as surety. William W. WADDLE (or WADDELL) had previously md Julia NORMAN in 1846. The WADDELLs lived on the Jamestown-to-Monticello Road. Their ch incl Sarah Jane WADDELL; Isaac N. WADDELL; Thursa C. WADDELL; Dalton W. T. WADDELL; Martha A. B. WADDELL; Polly A. WADDELL; John Samuel WADDELL; James R. WADDELL; and Minerva C. WADDELL. William W. WADDLE's parents may have been John B. and Mary WADDLE.
  • 4. William HUFF (1812 OH or KY - ) on 31 Dec 1845 in Wayne Co, KY, md a widow Mrs. Hetty WRIGHT. They had ch Sarah J. and James B. William HUFF was recorded once as b in OH, but several times as born in KY. \ In 1880, he stated both his parents were born in KY. He may be of another lineage.
  • 5. George Washington HUFF (28 Feb 1816 KY - 22 July 1902 Hart Co, KY) md Malinda DENTON (10 Jan 1812 NC - 30 Dec 1901 KY), prob dau of Isaac and Mary S. DENTON, and lived in several counties of KY before settling in Hart Co. Ch incl Clayton M. DENTON; Lorenzo Dow DENTON; William A. DENTON; Isaac N. DENTON; Hannah Cathern DENTON; John W. DENTON; Harden Thomas DENTON; and possibly Clinton DENTON.
  • 6. Phillip Newton HUFF (about 1819 Kentucky – 7 February 1878 burial Diamond Springs, El Dorado, California[2] ) on 24 Dec 1840 in Wayne Co, KY, md Catherine SHEARER, with Solomon SHEARER as surety[3]. This family moved to California.
  • 7. Mary Ann HUFF on 4 Oct 1843 in Wayne Co, KY, md John W. SPANN and lived on Elk Spring Creek.
  • 8. Nancy Ann HUFF (abt.1823 Kentucky - 1913 Cains Store, Pulaski, Kentucky ) md Jeremiah CALHOUN.
  • 9. Robert M. HUFFT ( ) on 2 Sep 1847 in Wayne Co, KY, md Margaret SHEARER, with Adam N. SHEARER as surety. This family has not been identified later.
  • 10. Jesse HUFF ( ) before 1857 md Catherine ABBOTT.

There is a vague tradition in the family of George W. HUFF that the HUFFs were of German origin, that they came first to Harlan Co, KY, from Southwest VA. Then they moved west gradually, with Phillip and Hannah dying in Wayne Co.

There was a John HUFF (born 1781, prob VA) family in Wayne Co from about 1810 through 1830. He md Sarah KELSEY, and they eventually settled in Pulaski Co, MO. Ch are recalled as Alexander; John; William Kelsey; Susannah J.; Mary; Ellender; Catherine; and Sarah Osborn. His descendants believe him to be son of a Philip HUFF. He was not son of Phillip and Rachel (UNKNOWN) HUFF of Montgomery County, Virginia (Floyd County after 1831), nor of their son son of Philip, who had several children not presently identified but who did not marry and start having children until 1796. Y-DNA testing has proven that this Philip is not related genetically to the Philip HUFF whose spouse was Rachel, nor any of their descendants. A relationship with some female of that line (i.e. iligitimacy) resulting in adoption of the Huff surname also seems implausible. The two families evidence little in the way of similarities suggestive of any relationship whatsoever. Any apparent atDNA matches at this level would be difficult to impossible to claim as meaningful, unless perhaps with advanced triangulation and comparisons of specific SNPs and segments.

There was an Isaac HUFF family in Wayne Co, KY, before 1830 who was so poor that the father bound out his children to learn trades [Question: Was this really a sign of poverty?]. Son Delemarius was bound out at age 12 in 1820 to Josiah BARNES to learn to become a shoemaker. Comecus was bound out to Absolum ADAMS. John was bound out to Andrew HURIFORD to learn blacksmithing. A nine-year-old son was bound out to Gabriel SANDERS. Isaac was on the 1820 census but may have moved away from Wayne Co before 1830. He seems to have been too old to be son of Phillip, but was possibly a brother.

Huff lineage is not known. Phillip and Hannah were from VA and KY.

1810 not identified
1800 he was not the Philip listed in "Second Census of Kentucky," p 143. Philip Huff, Cumberland County.
1790 not identified, but death record says he was born in Wayne County. All of Wayne Co would have been Lincoln County then. (source citation needed; 1850 census indicated a Virginia birth)
1857, needed medical attention in Wayne Co KY
Death record at Ancestry.com doesn't name his parents, but says, probably mistakenly, that he was born in Wayne Co KY.
George W Huff in 1880 and 1900 said his father had been born in TN.
Letters from Luther Huff said the family went first to Clinton Co in KY before settling permanently in Wayne Co. (this may refer to the other Phillip Huff)
Our Philip might be related in some way to Philip Newton of Harlan Co KY, 1830.
Hough, Granville. Hough and Huff Families of the US: 1620-1820 Southeastern States, Vol III, 1974, p 72: This is where Granville had earlier stated in print that this Philip was born 1765, but later retracted and agreed that 1785 was the correct date.
Granville W Hough wrote me 18 Jul 1988 that "It is my present belief that Phillip Huff was son of Phillip and Rachel (Miller) Huff of VA or possibly a grandson. Circumstantially, this fits better than anything I know. (Vol III, p 61)." He also gives many of Philip's children's marriages, plus other data. In a later letter, he clarified that Phillip Huff and Rachel Jackson had two children who married Millers and "I got confused in my letter to you." Philip and Rachel had a son Philip, b ca 1785, who moved to IN, and Granville was "willing to consider the possibility that we have the two Phillips reversed in some way." [this section refers to the other Philip]
Philip's eldest son William was probably not born in Ohio. Granville Hough's extensive records show only one for a Philip in Ohio in that time frame: Vol II, Federal Land Series, p 981, poss in Military District, Rn 1, twp 1. "1812, Jul 12. Michael Nourse requested land for Philip Huff and ______ Akin, based on a warrant issued to Pvt James McCurdy."
Wayne Co KY Court record, 1/29/1857: "It appears to the undersigned that Phillip Huff is laboring under serious indispositon and that he wholly is unable to pay a Physician for waiting upon him, therefore John B. S. Frisbie is hereby authorized and directed to administer and attend him during his sickness at the charge of the sourt to the amount of $20 if he needs it. M. P. Buster."
Is Alexander Huff another son? 1840 Wayne Co KY: 000001.../1001...
"Huff Family Tree" at Ancestry.com lists a son Jesse, b 1830 TN. But there was no son born ca 1830 in this family's 1840 census.
Philip also had a possible oldest son John P Huff, who married Sarah Woolbridge in Wayne Co KY ca 1834.
J. Phillip London, America the Beautiful: A Family History, Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1997, lists all appearances of Huff families in Wayne Co KY before 1840.
1816: Philip Huff, one male over 21, one horse
1819: same; also Isaac Huff
1820: Philip Huff
1821: Philip Huff, 50 acres, one male over 21, one horse; two men named James Huff
1823: Philip Huff on tax list
1824-5, 1827, 1830, 1833-1840: same
1830, 1840, 1850 census: Philip Huff
Others on tax lists:
1833-5, 1836: Lemuel Huff
1833-6: Joshua Huff
1833-40: William Huff; a second William appears in 1836
1835: John P Huff
1840: George W Huff, no land

Text: Wayne Co KY Vital Records, Vol. 5, 1978, p. 171: "County Court Claims. 1857 January 29th. It appears to the undersigned that Phillip Huff is laboring under serious indisposition and that he wholly is unable to pay a Physician for waiting upon him, therefore John B. S. Frisbie is hereby authorized and directed to administer and attend him during his sickness at the charge of the Court to the amount of $20 if he needs it. M. P. Buster."

Additional Notes

Today (9 Jun 2010) I discovered that John's brother-in-law, Alexander Kelsey, was next door to Philip's possible in-law, John Spencer, in the 1820 census, Wayne Co KY.
It should be noted that Granville Hough consistently spells "Phillip" even when other records show the more common "Philip." I have tried to copy his spelling when citing him. KP
Another time, Granville Hough wrote: "These were in Wayne County before 1822: Phillip Huff and Hannah family; Isaac Huff family; John & Sarah (Kelsey) family (to Pulaski Co MO); Samuel Huff family (to Jackson Co AL); Wiley Hoff; Daniel Huff and Polly fam. (Polly md [2] John Stinson. Or maybe it was Polly Stinson md [2] Daniel Huff by 1834.) "It seems quite probable that some of the above are descended from Phillip and Rachel, but not all. There must have been another early Huff or Hoff family passing through [Wayne Co KY]. Some of these used Dutch given names: Delemaris; Cemecus; Deadamica; Tunulia; Tilemaus. I suspect this was a Hoff family of PA or NJ origin who wound up in the area. Also, some of the later records show Hufft, and that name must be considered." [I have often thought the use of Hufft was less important than some researchers made it. I never saw many occurences and those were 20th century. KP] [this section mixes together info re the two different Philips]
It is improbable, but Philip's wife, Hannah Spencer, might have had a second or third cousin, John Wade Loofbourrow, who married Mary Haff/Hoff/Huff in NJ. This family were Quakers.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Phillip by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Phillip:

There were numerous individuals named Philip Huff. But to review the two Philips that appear to be under scrutiny here... DNA results show that the following two individuals most assuredly were not one and the same person:

Huff-92: haplogroup G-M201

Huff-126: haplogroup: Q-M242

"Philip" was a common given name of that era...literally among the "top 10." In addition to the Y-DNA results, the above two Philips were living in different locations in different counties and at least 100 miles apart (during the same span of years) and having children born (during the same years) with different spouses. Please exercise caution regarding Huff-92 & Huff-126...they and their offspring have sometimes been combined or mixed together in any number of ways on people's old family trees.

HAPLOGROUP G-M201

This Philip has had Y-DNA testing done by descendants of two different sons who do not appear to have added/confirmed their testing here in WikItree. Descendants of these two sons were tested: Philip Newton Huff or Hufft, FTDNA test kit 253306, and George Washington Huff, FTDNA test kit 210436. They are in Group 14 in the Hough Project at https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/hough/about
