Biography

Jeremiah Washington "Jerman" or "German" HUFF (25 Jul 1815 VA - 18 Mar 1891 Washington County, Arkansas). Previously, Jerman was thought possibly to have been a son of John Huff. However, Y-DNA testing has shown that descendants have a different haplogroup and thus are unlikely genetically related in the male line (assuming the various family trees are accurate, etc.). See below for additional detail, under the DNA Testing section.

On 26 May 1836 in Floyd County, Kentucky, married Dicy Jane PRATOR (1820 VA - 27 Mar 1888 KY), daughter of Jonathan and Margaret (GRIFFITH) PRATOR. One J. W. HUFF had married Mary Ann "Polly" HAMILTON in Floyd County, Kentucky on 12 Mar 1834; it is not certainly known if this is the same person. Note: Previously, Jane Prater, daughter of Elijah White PRATHER Sr., was shown as a spouse but was unlinked Oct 2021. Likely the error came about due to the similarity of names with Dicy Jane PRATOR.

Jerman HUFF was in Floyd County, Kentucky, until 1844, when he became Constable in District 3 of the newly formed Johnson County, Kentucky. Johnson County was formed on February 24, 1843, from land given by Floyd, Lawrence, and Morgan counties. Later, Jerman was a carpenter in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky. They lived in Floyd/Johnson County, Kentucky, until about 1890, when he moved to Arkansas with some of his children.

There is a brief sketch about Jeremiah in The Big Sandy Valley : A history of the people and country from the earliest settlement to the present time, by William Ely. 1881.[1]

German Huff, of Paintsville, has also been an educator, if not a benefactor, by his example in the practice of economy. By following the laws of trade from the time he made salt on Middle Creek to the present, he has never wasted any thing worth saving, whereby he has lived well and at the same time accumulated a competency. It was said by one who knew of his current savings, that he could take twenty dollars, have a basket of provisions prepared, the product of his garden and farm, take a canoe and push it to Portsmouth, Ohio, and back home to Paintsville, and, in the sale of goods bought with the twenty dollars, make a snug profit.

Children

Children Included:

  1. Mary B. HUFF, or possibly Mary Jane HUFF (13 Jul 1836 KY - ) may have been a child of the first marriage, but it seems more likely she was born soon after the marriage to Dicy. She may be the Mary who in 1856 md Captain Wiley C. PATRICK, killed in Georgia during the Civil War.[2] Or a descendant indicated that she married a ??? HAMILTON, which may have occurred after the death of Captain PATRICK.
  2. Matilda Jane HUFF (1 Mar 1839 Floyd County, Kentucky - 2 Dec 1859 Johnson County, Kentucky) on 9 Dec 1858 md George Washington LITERAL (may also appeared spelled LITTRELL), and LITERAL ch incl: Matilda J. (LITERAL) HARSH (1859 – 1936);
  3. James Harrison HUFF (14 Apr 1841 KY - 22 Feb 1912 Harrison, Boone Co, AR). James H. served for a short time in the Union Army, but not long enough for his widow to draw a pension. One James HUFF was Constable in Dists 1, 2, and 3 in 1860, 1861, and 1871. On 6 July 1860, he md Lyncha Jane PRICE (25 Sep 1839 - 28 June 1879), and their ch were Alburn Tiverton HUFF; Laura Bell HUFF; William Cretlender HUFF; and Charles Beecher HUFF. James H. md (2) on 14 Jan 1880 in Patesville, Hancock Co, KY, Nancy Elizabeth COOPER (14 Jan 1860 Floyd Co, KY, after 1923, prob. Boone Co, AR), and their ch were John Henry HUFF; Clara Gertrude HUFF; James Clyde HUFF; Maud Viola HUFF; Frank Marvin HUFF; and Robert Victor HUFF.
  4. Sarah Ann HUFF (30 Jan 1843 KY - ) on 8 Feb 1860 md Benjamin Franklin PRICE. In 1860, her census entry may be misread as L. D. Children included: Stella PRICE (md Edgar JONES);
  5. William HUFF (c 1844 - likely died young?)
  6. John W. HUFF (9 Apr 1846 Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky - 2 Jan 1918 Hospital for Disabled Veterans, Milwaukee, WI) served in Comp C, 45th KY Mtd Inf, then in 1866 went to MN to live. 12. Amanda HUFF (22 Oct 1858 KY - ) md John M. PRUSTON [PRESTON?].
  13. Brownlow HUFF, full name possibly William G. Brownlow HUFF (15 June 1862 KY - ) on 31 Oct 1884 md Alice M. PRICE.

Lineage

Huff lineage is Jeremiah W. and Dicie J. (Prator) of VA and KY; probably NOT John and Elizabeth (Pratt) of VA and KY (at least apparently not genetically)

Y-DNA Testing

It appears that at least two individuals who identify as descendants have Y-DNA tested as haplogroup R-M269. They are grouped under the heading: R Haplogroup - John Hilton/Hylton b. c1665 England; d. 1719 New Kent Co, VA.[9] However, they have not yet registered as tested with WikiTree. FamilyTreeDNA.com test kit info:

test kit # N22507 Jerman W Huff, b 1815, Montgomery Co, VA
haplogroup R-M269
test kit # 929184 Jerman W Huff, b. 1815 and d. 1891
haplogroup R-M269

Previously, it was suggested that Jerman was a son of John Huff and Elizabeth Pratt, since John Huff apparently had been associated with both Montgomery County, Virginia and Floyd County, Kentucky, both of which Jerman may also have had an association with. However, a Y-DNA tested descendant of John Huff had a different haplogroup (Q-M242) than two descendants of Jerman (R-M269) who were Y-DNA tested.

Tolbert [poss https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Huff-5833] had brothers Jerman, Henderson [poss https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Huff-5576], and Harrison. I am from the line of Jerman. He was my ggf.
I do not know the father of these brothers but their mother was most probably Sarah. There is a Sarah Huff in the 1830 census of Montgomery County, VA with sons of the proper age.
Land records and some other information suggest that she was a relation to John Huff (1770 VA) who lived in Floyd County, KY. [unlikely, a descendant of John tested as a different Y-DNA haplogroup, Q-M242]
DNA tests on one male of Jerman's line and one male of Henderson's line have raised the possibility that the brothers did not all have the same father. So the male line is yet uncertain. I know of no DNA tests that have been done on any male of John Huff's line but that might help clear things up if we could fine someone to test.
Sorry I could not be of more help at this time.
[Note: The 1830 census of a Sarah Huff would seem to warrant further investigation. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XH5H-J1H The indexed entry for it specifies it was for Newburn, Montgomery County, Virginia. Was that meant to be Newbern, now in Pulaski County? Looking at the actual pages, they have Charlton, Western District at the top. Where was this? There is currently a Charlton that is in Craig County, Virginia. Bottom line, it's really not clear where Sarah actually was. Note also: This census page is a rough alphabetical sort of surnames starting with the letter H. This sort of listing often indicated household enumerations in areas surrounding the indicated location, like it being the nearby town or city. In addition to Sarah, other Huff households on the page appear to include: Francis, Samuel, Henry, and James.]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jeremiah by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jeremiah:

Jerman was my 3g-grandfather through James Harrison Huff, Album Tiverton Huff, Donovan “Don” Douglas Huff, and William “Bill” Huff. My DNA Test Kit 114925 puts me in the R- M269 group as a descendant of the Helton/Hilton/Hylton family. Jerman’s mother is Sarah Huff and information from descendants of her son Henderson states that Sarah spoke very poor English.
