Biography

Elizabeth Hughes was born in Sydney in 1858. She was the eldest daughter of [[David Hughes | Captain David Hughes]] and Sarah Ann Rees. [1]

She married Charles Pierce in Dunedin in 1885.

Pierce—Hughes. —March 21, at Dunedin, by the Rev Dr Stewart, Charles Henry, fifth son of the late John Pierce, of Lyttelton, to Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Captain David Hughes, barque Armistice. They settled in Fremantle, Western Australia, where Charles farmed and also managed hotels, including His Worship’s Larder with her father David.

Charles and Elizabeth had six children: Henry David (1886); Alfred Leonard (1887); Albert Charles (1889); Myrtle Lillian (1893); Charles Hughes (1898).

Charles passed away in 1913.

Henry, their eldest son, died of wounds in the Somme in May 1918.

Elizabeth passed away in 1922, aged 64.

OBITUARY. The funeral of the late Mrs. Elizabeth Pierce, relict of the late Mr. Charles Henry Pierce, of Fremantle, took place in Monday afternoon, the 20th instant, and was largely attended. The deceased, who was 64 years of age, was born in Sydney, N.S.W., and had been a resident of this State for the past 36 years. A grown-up family of three sons and two daughters survive her. The funeral cortege moved from her late residence, "Pipiriki," Hampton-road, Fremantle, and proceeded to the Fremantle Cemetery, where the remains were laid to the rest in the Church of England portion. The Rev. F. T. Bowen officiated at the graveside. The chief mourners were: Messrs. Leonard, Albert, and Charles Pierce (Sons), Mr. J. Jarvis (son-in-law), Mr. F. Nicholas (brother-in-law), Messrs. Claude and Ernest Nicholas (nephews), and Mr. P. Hedgeland. The pall-bearers were: Messrs. J. M'Neil, A. Newman, W. Ireland, J. Lawrence, J. Hogan, and G. Lonsdale. Wreaths were placed on the grave by the employees of W. Seppeli and Sons, the South Fremantle Football Club "B" grade, the members of the East Fremantle Football Club, the staff of the sub-station, relatives and numerous friends. Communications expressing sympathy continue to be received by the bereaved relatives. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. Arthur E. Davies andCo., of Fremantle and Claremont.
