Biography

William Hughes was the father of William Morris Hughes, Prime Minister of Australia.

He was born in Holyhead in North Wales and worked as a carpenter at the Houses of Parliament. He was Welsh speaking, a deacon of the Particular Baptist Church and a conservative in politics. He married Jane Morris, a 37 year old farmer's daughter from Llansantffraid, Montgomeryshire, who had been in service in London, and William Morris was her only child. She died when he was seven and for the next five years Hughes lived with his father's sister, Mary, at Llandudno, where he went to school, spending his holidays on the Morris farm. A plaque on a guest house in Abbey Road Llandudno bears testament to his residency.

Of his parents, his marriage record (1861) records his father as William Hughes 'mason'. The only William Hughes who was a mason in North Wales was of Bodedern, 7km SW of Holyhead, who baptised a son William on 29 Dec 1822.

William Hughes married Jane Morris 7/6/1861 at St Peter, Eaton Square, Pimlico (Westminster Marriages FMP):

"William Hughes, joiner, of Moreton Terrace (parents William Hughes mason); Jane Morris spinster of Clapton, Hackney (fthr Peter Morris farmer)"

He appears in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census at Westminster:

1871 census Belgrave, St George Hannover Square, london: Wm Hughes widowr 47 joiner b Liverpool, Wm M son 2 b London, Mary Hughes sister 52 b housekeeper b North Wales.[1]
1881 census: 78, Vauxhall B Road, St Margaret and St John the Evangelist Westminster, St George Hanover Square, London, England: William Hughes 56 widower joiner b Holyhead Anglesey, william M Hughes 19 clerk son b London, Mary Hughes 60 spinster sister b Holyhead.[2]
1891 census: Workhouse St George Hanover Square: William Hughes 61 widower inmate of the workkhouse joiner b Holyhead Carnavon.

He also appears in the 1841 and 1851 census at Toxteth Park, Liverpool:

1841 census: Mann St Upper, Toxteth Park, Lancashire: William Hughes 55, Bar(?) Keeper, (not b in Cnty), William 15 joining app, Elisabeth 20, Mary 20, Sarah 15, Hannah 13, Jno 11.

This may conflict with a possible entry at Holyhead in 1841:

1841 census: Detached, Holyhead, Anglesey, Wales: William Hughes 15 joiners app.(w Richard Owen 15 ag labr)

Llanerchymedd is a village 6 miles south of Amlwich.

There are no firm baptisms that match the births of him and his siblings.

He died aged 67 in Q4 1891 (St George Hannover,London, BDM)
