Educated at Avoca School, Blackrock, Co. Dublin (1942-54), High School Dublin (1954-56). Trinity College Dublin, (B.A. (Mod), Physics, M.Sc. Physics; 1956-60, 60-62). Sheffield University (PhD, Space Physics).

Married Mary Lou Kennedy on 1 December 1962.
Worked as a Research Assistant and studied for a PhD in the Space Physics Group. My supervisor was Tom Kaiser.
Post-Doc, Research Fellow in Space Physics, Sheffield University 1970-75. Worked on the design and development of the VLF radio experiment on Ariel 3, the first satellite built in Britain and on a similar experiment on Ariel 4. Worked at the launch of these satellites at Vandenburg Air Force Base in California. Also prepared (Sheffield and WRE Salisbury, South Australia) rocket experiments and worked at their launch from Woomera in 1966 and 1969.
Emigrated in June 1975, with Mary Lou and children, to Durban South Africa to take up a lectureship in Physics at The University of Natal. Travelled to Durban from Southampton on the Windsor Castle.
University of Natal, South Africa 1975-2010. Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, Professor. Director of University Space Research Programme in Antarctica (1992-2010) . Appointed Emeritus Professor in 2000.
Worked in Antarctica at SANAE in 1995, 1998 and 2000. Travelled aboard the Aghulas and on one occasion the SA naval ship Drakensberg.

Chair of the National Committees of COSPAR and SCOSTEP and their National Delegate. Member of National Committees of URSI, IAGA and IAU.
Chair of UN Forum Committee and Founder of the University Astronomy Society. Extra-Mural lecturer in Astronomy, Antarctica and Space Physics. Member of The University Senate.
Research Interests: Magnetosphere Physics: wave-particle interactions; ionosphere, lightning, aurora, LIE and sprites
Teaching Interests: Electromagnetic Theory, Nuclear Physics, Classical Mechanics, Space Physics, Astrophysics.
Retired to Sheffield, UK in 2010
Pastimes: Bridge: represented South Africa (captain) in The Bermuda Bowl in Monte Carlo in 2003 and in Estoril, Portugal, in 2005. Won Silver Medal in African Zone Qualifier in 2005 in Casablanca.
