Biography

Note The marriage of Charlotte Mary Keck to Samuel Terry Hughes has some strange features. Charlotte Mary was under age and her family was Catholic whereas this is a Presbyterian marriage and her name is given as Mary. Samuel is also under age having been born in 1829. If it was a runaway marriage it is aided by a member of the Hughes family, John (presumably his father) as witnesses to the marriage were John Hughes and Harriet Alcock. Perhaps it was another John Hughes as the signature is clearly "John Hughes". The form of Samuel and John’s surname is also odd, since the family, I understood, used the double barrelled form always. John Terry Hughes certainly did and in references I have seen to him in public papers, he is always John Terry Hughes or John T Hughes. Samuel had no brothers. The marriage took place at Campbelltown. The Hughes family probably had managed to retain some land in the area and Charlotte’s address in 1864 (birth of Samuel) is Narellan. Georgina however was born 1852 in Elizabeth St which would suggest the house owned by Rosetta Terry or her daughter Esther Terry Hughes (Samuel’s grandmother and mother respectively) or perhaps transferred to Samuel. Where were the Keck’s living by this time? Samuel’s address given as Twofold Bay is a mystery. Although John Terry Hughes was bankrupted in the great crash of 1843, as also was his brother in law John Hoskings, the females of the family (Rosetta Terry,Esther Terry Hughes and Martha Hosking) held onto much property and sources of income.
