• At the age of 45, Harriet appeared in the 1861 Canadian Census with her husband and children in Tudor Twp., Hastings Co., Canada West. They were living in a log house. This census indicated that she was born in Wales, however her age in this census would indicate that she would have been born around 1816, not 1806. (see research notes) ^[3]

• At the age of 50, Harriet appeared in the 1871 Canadian Census with her husband, two children, and grandchild in Tudor Twp., Hastings Co., Ontario, Canada. The record indicated that she was born around 1821 in Wales. ^[4]

Harriet passed away on 14 Jan 1890 in Hastings Co., Ontario, Canada. The cause of death was appoplexy (brain hemmorage) witnessed by son, James. ^[20]

There is ample evidence that David’s wife was named Harriet Hughes, but there is ambiguous evidence about her birth date and birth place, as well as her parents’ identity. Various sources cite her birthplace as Wales, England, Germany.

Several Ancestry.com family tree (Hughes family, owned b jdprice01; Moore family, owned by marilynmeyer0) suggests that her parents were Thomas Hughes and Anne Roberts of Wales, but she is listed in English census records long after she is documented to have been in Canada, so it is unlikely that Thomas and Anne were her parents.

Her first child was born in Nova Scotia in 1838. Several censuses suggest a birth date that would have made her as young as 13 at the birth of her first child.
