Biography

Edward was born 16 December 1827, in Paddington, London. He was the second son of Edward and Amy Hughes. He was baptised at Christ Church, Bell Street in Paddington five days later. His father, also Edward was listed as a servant residing at 27 Harrow Street, just a few yards from the church[1].

He married Harriett Ford/Foord of Maidstone in Kent, she was twenty months his senior. Her younger sister, Tryphenah Foord married Edward's younger brother, Arthur. They went on to have two sons together.

In 1851 they were living at 29 Wilmington Square in Clerkenwell, London[2]. He is listed as the Clerk to a Turkey Merchant.

In 1861 they were living in 8 Havelock Terrace, Downham Road, Islington with their two sons, Edward Robert (9) and William Arthur (7)[3]. He is listed as a Commercial Clerk in the East India Trade. They also have with them her brother Charless Foord, visiting and listed as a painter and another commercial clerk as a boarder together with one serving girl.

By 1871 the family was living at 24 Beaufort Street in Chelsea[4]. Edward was listed as a Clerk to East India Merchant. Both their sons were there, though William is listed as a Clerk to Silk Merchant, while his older brother Robert is still a scholar. Also with them is their nephew William Foord, aged 9.

Edward died in September 1875 in Wallington Bridge, Surrey. He ws just 48 years old. He was buried in Brompton Cemetery in London on 25 September 1875[5].
