Obituary

KENNEBUNK - Dorsey Follin Hughes, 89, of Bradford Common on the Common, died Dec. 19, 2001, at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, after a brief illness.

He spent many happy summer vacations at his residence in Cape Porpoise.

He was born July 31, 1912, in Washington, D.C. the son of Benjamin Rodgers and Cornelia (Follin) Hughes.

He was a graduate of Western High School in Washington, D.C. He received a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Union College, in Schenectady, N.Y., in 1934 and was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.

He began his working career at Potomac Electric Power Company in Washington, D.C. While in college and retired in 1975 as senior vice president after 42 years of service. He was a life member of electrical and electronic engineers and served on the board of the Salvation Army. He was also a charter member of the Arlington Forest Methodist Church in Arlington, Virginia.

During World War II he served the U.S. Navy at the Naval Ordinance Laboratory. In recognition of his work, he was named as an honorary member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by King George VI.

His favorite past time was playing golf with his wife Betty at the Kenwood Golf and Country Club and the Cape Arundel Golf Club.

His wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Smith Hughes, died in 1992.

Survivors include one son, Dorsey Follin Hughes Jr., of San Francisco, California; two daughters, Elizabeth Strong Hughes of Bath, Maine and Margaret Hughes Rakowsky of Greenwood Village, Colorado; one brother, William Franklin Hughes of Silver Springs, Md.; a sister, Edna Marshburn Metzingerof Sperryville, Va.; seven grand-children; and two great-grandchildren.

A private Interment will be held in Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, ME.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army Chapter of one’s choice.
