Biography

Cornelius Hull immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Cornelius Hull was born prior to 14 April 1628, the date that he was baptized in Crewkerne, Somerset, England.[1][2] He was the son of George Hull and Thamzen Michell.[1][2][3][4][5]

Cornelius and his father immigrated from England and eventually settled in Fairfield, Connecticut.[6] Cornelius was on a list of heads of families living in Fairfield between 1639 and 1650.[6]

He married Rebecca Jones about 1653 in Fairfield, Connecticut. She was the daughter of Rev. John Jones, the first minister of Fairfield.[2][3][4][6][7][8]

They had the following children[2][3][4][5][6]:

  1. Samuel Hull, b. about 1654, d. before 18 Aug 1720, 1st m. Deborah Beers, 2nd m. Elizabeth Hubbell, 3rd m. Jane [last name unknown]
  2. Theophilus Hull, b. about 1655, d. 5 Jun 1710, m. Mary Sanford
  3. Cornelius Hull, b. about 1655, d. 7 May 1740, m. Sarah Sanford
  4. Rebecca Hull, b. about 1656, m. John Lyon
  5. Sarah Hull, b. about 1658, 1st m. John Knapp, 2nd m. Robert Silliman
  6. Martha Hull, b. about 1660, d. before 28 Aug 1727, 1st m. Samuel Smith, 2nd m. Cornelius Stratton, 3rd m. [first name unknown] Adams

Cornelius was a land surveyor and a large land holder.[5] His name appears 31 times in the Fairfield land records.[5]

He represented Fairfield as a deputy to the Connecticut General Court during 1656, 1660, 1662 and 1667.[5][8]

In 1661, he was appointed as a lieutenant for Fairfield County. On 25 February 1675, he was made a lieutenant in Major Robert Treat's Connecticut militia during the King Philip's War. After the war, he was awarded a significant amount of land In recognition of his service.[5][6][8][9]

His will, dated 16 September 1695,[5][6] stipulated that his land was to be conveyed to his children as follows:

"To son Cornelius, 75 acres in three plots.
To sons Cornelius and Theophilus, certain meadow lands.
To son Cornelius, two additional tracts.
To daughter Rebecca Hull, his home lot, house and barn.
To daughter Sarah Silliman, 65 acres in two plots.
To daughter Martha Stratton, 20 acres.
To his grandson George, son of Cornelius, a certain farm.
To his daughter Rebecca, his household goods.
To his son Samuel, the gun he called his fowling piece.
To his daughter Rebecca, one cow and a heifer.
To his three sons Samuel, Cornelius, and Theophilus, the remainder of his estate to be divided equally among them."[2][8]

Cornelius Hull died sometime prior to 7 October 1695, the date when his estate was inventoried for probate.[3]

Research Notes

Baptism date: Both The Great Migration Begins and The Ancestry of Lorenzo Ackley show the Cornelius Hull baptism date as 13 April 1628, but, the scanned image of the original parish register clearly shows the date as xiiij th April 1628, where xiiij is 14 in roman numerals (the j is treated like another i).[1][10] The baptism date in the parish register is also interpreted as 14 April 1628 by The Descendants of Mr. George Hull and Thamzen Michel that had access to the parish records provided directly by the Records Office, Taunton, Somerset, England.[2]

Birth date: An exact date of birth is not documented in the biography because of conflicting evidence from multiple sources with no way of determining if any of them are correct.[2][3][8] There are no original sources identified for the birth dates. The dates are all suspected of being speculation based on the baptism date found in the parish register. It would be pointless to include all of these birth dates in this biography if they are likely just estimates based on the baptism date.

Marriage date: The marriage date in this profile has intentionally been left as "about 1653" because of conflicting evidence. One source shows the marriage occurring on 19 November 1652[2], but this date appears to potentially in conflict with two real estate transactions dated 1653 that were connected to the occasion of his wedding. One was a grant of 3 acres from the Town of Fairfield to Cornelius in 1653 and the second was a gift of 40 acres from George Hull to his son Cornelius in 1653.[8] Perhaps the real estate transactions were not completed until weeks or months after a November 1652 wedding which could have placed them in the year 1653 and still be consistent with a wedding in 1652. A third set of sources states that the gift of land from his father occurred on "November 29, 1653[10], ten days after the marriage of his son Cornelius".[11]

Burial: No credible evidence can be found for the burial location of Cornelius Hull. Find A Grave attempts to place his burial in Greenfield Hill Cemetery[12], but there is no gravestone or other record to support this. There are several other cemeteries within Fairfield where Cornelius could have been buried, including the Old Burying Ground, located within a few hundred feet of where Cornelius lived.[2][8] It is also possible that he could have been privately buried on property that he had owned.
