Biography

Augustine Hunnicutt was born about 1625, probably in England.[1] He was reportedly the son of William Huncote.[citation needed]

Augustine was living in Surry County, Virginia, by 1653.[2]

He married (assuming she was his only wife) Mary Carter in about 1660, most likely in Surry County. The marriage contract was for a 99 year lease of 400 acres, given to Mary by her brother George Carter and Mary's mother Alyse Croxon Carter Parke.[1]

Augustine made his will on 30 May 1682, and died before it was proved in Surry County on 6 March 1682/3.[3]

Children

Children of Augustine Hunnicutt and (probably Mary) Carter, all named in his will, include:[1]

Will

Augustine Hunnicutt made his will in Surry County, Virginia, on 30 May 1682 and it was proved in Surry County on 6 March 1682/3. In it, he divides most of his land between his two sons (Augustine and Robert), and also names his wife (Mary) and daughter (Katherine).[3]

Research Notes

Disputed Children

John

Some, without source, have identified John Hunnicutt as an additional child of Augustine, claiming that he was his son by an unknown first wife. However, John was still alive and appears on the tithables lists in Southwarke Parish, Surry County, from 1678-1684;[4] and Augustine made his will on 30 May 1682 in Surry County but does not name John.[3] In his 1918 article published in the William & Mary Quarterly, James Branch Cabell asserts that "nothing has been discovered to show any connection between" these two men, despite their "rather unusual surname" and the fact that they "both settled in Surry at about the same time."[5]

Given this, John has been detached as a child of Augustine. Please do not reattach him without first posting a comment citing a source for this claim.

Robert

In the same article, Cabell identifies Robert Hunnicutt as the son of John, rather than Augustine. He acknowledges that Augustine names a "Robert" as one of his two sons in his will, but asserts that this Robert "removed to North Carolina, where he ... left many descendants, in Johnston and Granville counties." However, Cabell cites no source for the claim that Augustine's son Robert removed to North Carolina.[6]

Cabell's claim that Robert is the son of John is disputed in a paper self-published by Elizabeth Herzfeld. She cites Augustine's will as proof that Robert is the son of Augustine, not John. However, she does not address Cabell's unsourced claim that Robert, son of Augustine, removed to North Carolina.[1]

The Robert identified as the son of Augustine received a large bequest of land in Surry County in Augustine's will proved on 6 March 1682/3. He was therefore at least 21 by 1683, i.e., born in 1662 or earlier. Both Herzfeld and Cabell estimate that the Robert Hunnicutt who married Margaret Wyke and became a Quaker was born in the mid-1670s, but this is apparently just an estimate based on an estimated marriage in about 1700, so he could have been born much earlier, particularly if Mary was his second wife.

The earliest record cited by either Cabell or Herzfeld referring to a Robert Hunnicutt in Surry County (other than Augustine's will) is a land patent granted on 23 March 1715/6 to "Robert Hunnicut of Prince George County", describing a 100 acre tract "on the south side of the main blackwater swamp in Surry County," which was adjacent to "the said Hunnicut's old land."[7][8]

Thus, although the relationship remains uncertain, it seems likely Herzfeld is correct: the Robert who married Margaret Wyke was probably Robert, son of Augustine, based on the following:

  • Cabell cites no source for his statement that the Robert Hunnicutt, son of Augustine, removed to North Carolina.
  • Robert, son of Augustine, inherited land in Surry County from his father in 1683. Neither Cabell nor Herzfeld have found any record of him selling it before 1715.
  • Robert Hunnicutt, who received the 1715 land grant in Prince George County was already an owner of adjacent property in Surry County.
  • No one seems to dispute that the Robert Hunnicutt of Prince George County who received the 1715 land grant was the same man who married Margaret Wyke. According to Herzfeld, the marriage record of his daughter Hulda states that he was from Prince George County.[1]

Disputed Spouse

Alice Croxton Carter Parke Warren is Mary Carter's mother, is sometimes called Mary Alice Parke. I have found more sources to verifie a Mary Alice Parke was never married to Augustine Hunnicutt. Her name was Alyse Croxton the name Mary was not used by her. -- Trudy Roach

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Augustine by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Augustine:

I am again removing William Honeycutt as a child of Augustine Hunnicutt. No documented proof of parentage.

Cont. My memories of the trees in the bibles are not great. I do remember there were 6 Augustine Hunnicutts in a poem my father made to keep them straight. My father also had an interest in the daughter of one the Augustine's Mary. I no longer have the papers of my fathers. They were in horibles shape and someone thought the were trash and threw them out when I moved. So I basically worked to verify what he had written down.

As a child my father, Charles Warren Roach Jr. Had 6 family bibles 2 were Roach family bibles and 4 were Hunnicutt. He also had Law books from the early 1700s. I lost contact with my father in the mid 1970s. When I was a child my father would go over the family trees in those bibles and read them to me. I had papers that had my father's research , just notes on what ever paper he had on him. I was researching from his notes and written stories from his Hunnicutt family. His mother was a Hunnicutt. I found out in 2013 that my father died in 1993. No one in his family , my aunts or their husbands saw fit to inform me or my sister of his death. Nor have any of the inquiries I have made about any photos, papers or bibles been answered. At this point in time I know my uncle is dead.

There was a family bible that mentioned the senior Augustine Hunnicutt?? That's huge if that's what you're saying. I know you said it disappeared, but I'd like to know whatever more you know about that.

Jacob, some info on this profile still exsists from when I originally adopted this profile. I am not a person who will hack a profile apart because something is as of yet unsoursed. The info is there and is being worked on. I have been very ill amd have not worked on these for awhile. As you can see I did not add the parents of Augustine. I can only do so much at one time. I am working down line. The names in the family bibles I saw as a xhild were Hunnicutt. Unfortunately after the death of my father those disappeared.

Trudy, what source do you have that Augustine was born in Narborough, and that his parents were William Huncote and Agneta Harrison? To my knowledge, no place of birth has been found for Augustine, and there is an extraordinary amount of doubt that William Huncote and Agneta Harrison could be his parents. A professional team of genealogists hired by Jack Dawson Hunnicutt in the late 1950s surveyed various records, and found no evidence that William Huncote lived after his voyage into America, or had any kids. They also surveyed parish records, and found it much more likely that Hunnicutt comes from "Hunnacott" and various other similar names that were present (and are still present today) in Devon and Wiltshire. Some there even had the spelling of their name morph into "Honeycutt" later.

Mary is not John's mother...I will dig into my Grandmother's records to follow up thx

Deborah, there is no evidence for Augustine having more than one wife. Even if he did, which is certainly possible, there is no evidence.

Hi Jacob can you tell me why you removed Augustine's first wife?
