Biography

Four daughters are shown on the 1870 census and five daughters are shown on the1880 census (Gale TWP, Trempealeau Co, WI). Both John and Mary immigrated to the US in 1860 according to ther 1900 census. The same census says they had been married 37 years (ca 1863). Their oldest child, Ann, was born in 1864 in New Jersey (as per 1880 WI census). It is likely, therefore that they were married in either New Jersey or New York. The 1910 census for Gale TWP shows John and Mary Hunt living with just a grandson, Earl Shellhammer, age sixteen. (His father was born in Ohio, his mother in Wisconsin.) Wisconsin historical society records, however, show that daughter Lizzie, b. NJ, married a John Shellhammer. The census birth state is probably wrong. Both the 1900 and 1910 census indicate that John/Mary had five children, but that only four were living. I seems probable that Earl's mother, Lizzie, was the one who had died. This would explain why Earl was living with his grandparents. Since the family with the four oldest girls are on the 1870 census for New Jersey and since Margarets, the youngest child, was born in Wisconsin in 1871, can be concluded that John and Mary made the move to Wisconsin sometime in late 1870 or early 1871. There is a possibillity that they moved to the Ettrick area of Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, because Mary may have had a relative already living there. Mary’s mother was an Elwood, and an Elwood man was an establlished farmer outrside of Ettrick.
