Biography

Contrary to popular belief, John Todd's wife Susannah was not a Hunt. In particular, she was not the daughter of William Hunt and Elizabeth (Best) Todd as has been alleged. [1]

Subsequent research of the wills of William Hunt and Richard Best have shown that Susannah was not a child of William.[2]

She was actually a daughter of Michael and Ann (Brigg) Hopkinson of Halifax and Kildwick, Yorkshire. The Hopkinson family came to Rowley with Rev. Rogers in 1639.

Susannah married John Todd by April of 1649, before the birth of their daughter Mehitabel. John Todd was born at Bradford, Yorkshire, England about 1621, the son of John and Alice (Clayton) Todd. [3]

John was first of Charlestown and then settled at Rowley where he 'kept the ordinary.' He and his wife Susanna had 10 children. [4] [5][6]

The widow Mary (Todd) Grant, in her will of February 2, 1698, mentioned her 'sister Susannah Todd' wife of John Todd, and her 'sister Anne Wood.' John Todd is chosen one of her executors. [1] Obviously this was her nephew John Todd Jr., as Mary's brother in law John Todd had died at Rowley, Massachusetts on Feb. 14, 1689/90. [7] [5][6]

John Todd's will was written on Feb. 13, 1689/90. In it he names;

  • his beloved wife
  • son John
  • daughter Mehitable
  • daughter Ruth
  • daughter Mary
  • son Timothy
  • son Samuel
  • son James [8]

His widow Sarah died there on Nov. 18, 1710. [7][6]

The text recently added to her bio about her last name at birth being Hopkinson, and a tie to the so-named parents needs sourcing, or it needs to be moved to the Research Notes section.

Thought: The sisters Susannah, Anna and Mary who were allegedly dtrs of William Hunt, are still sisters, but are they still surnamed Hunt if William was disproved? I don't think so, but some research needs to be done to see if there is actually indication of a surname for any of them.

Hunt-636 and Hunt-345 appear to represent the same person because: Both represent the same person, wife of john Todd. Need to settle birth place, or note alternate birthplace in merged profile.

Not a problem Dave . it seems to me it would make sense to track down the other set of parents Enos and wife, which I started to do, but fell asleep. I'm not sure they exist, unless Enos is Enoch. I also see there is controversy about parents William and wife. I only did a quick peruse and am coming up with mixed stories.

Probably need to remove the parent(s) on both Susannah's.

Does anyone with PGM object if I remove William Hunt and wife as parents here, in order to facilitate the merge?
posted by Dave Rutherford
The unsourced parents will be disconnected with the merge.

Hunt-345 and Hunt-636 are not ready to be merged because: Please resolve the discrepancy in parents first. The note by Roland Baker suggests that she has been disproved as a daughter of William Hunt.

Hunt-636 and Hunt-345 appear to represent the same person because: Please merge these duplicate profiles.

Researchers take care with this profile. It has a lot of errors. William Hunt has been disproved as the father of Susannah, Ann and Mary. The three were sisters and that is all we know. For correct information on William Hunt Robert Charles Anderson suggests these three sources for this man: TAG 30:100-3, 175; Hoyt 211; Smith-Hale 135-38. Smith-Hale can be checked out here: Ancestry and posterity of Joseph Smith and Emma Hale https://archive.org/details/ancestryposterit00ande And Anderson consider the identity of Elizabeth his wife as "Best" to be inconclusive at best [GM2:1:402] b/c "Cousin" doesn't mean sister
