Biography

Thomas was born and lived at Grove Farms, his family’s home, all his life. He and his wife Elizabeth raised their children on the estate. It was located in Westchester, in an area that is now The Bronx.

Thomas was a trustee of the freehold and commonalty of the town of Westchester in 1692.[1]

Thomas received 1n 1688, from his parents Thomas and Elizabeth Hunt, the 100 acres of land on the water that has become known as Hunt's Point.[2] Long since taken over by the city of New York, Hunt’s Point is the site of New York City's main wholesale food market, one of the largest in the world.

Marriage and Children

Thomas Hunt married Elizabeth Gardiner/Gardner, in Westchester, likely at the Grove Farm, about 1697[3]

Records of Thomas's children are not well sourced:

Bolton (1848) says that Thomas and his wife (whom he does not name) had, at the Grove Farm:[1]

  • Thomas, who married Sarah Ward
  • Augustus
  • Lewis
  • Robert, who died in 1749
  • Abigail
  • John, who married Alethia Hunt, daughter of Thomas Hunt and Rachel Arnold.[4]

Davis (1988), who cites no specific sources for this family, lists the same five, adding that Thomas's wife was possibly a Graham, that son Robert married Christina Hunt (his first cousin), and reporting two more children:[5]

  • Josiah, b. circa 1667, of New Rochelle, m. Susannah
  • _____, probably Cecily, m. John Leggett,then Robert Edwards

Leggett (1913) says that Gabriel Leggett's son John, born at West Farms in 1677, m. Cicily Hunt and that he died in 1707[6]

No will or other probate documents, which might have clarified matters, were abstracted by Pelletreau.[7]

The identified sources support children Thomas (with no middle name), Augustus/Augustine, Lewis, Robert, Abigail, Josiah, and Cecily. Abigail and Cecily have not yet been attached as children. Three profiles now attached as purported children to this profile have no identified source supporting them, not on this profile nor on their own profiles: Smith, Elizabeth and Mary; perhaps should be detached. Further research is needed.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:
