Biography

Jane Hunt ... [1]

Bob Ellis added in Jun 2016: Dilla Thacker was born in Nelson County, Virginia, and the 1830 and 1840 census reports place him there. He married Jane Hunt in Fluvanna County in 1827, but based on the known birthplaces of their children, the family appears to have lived in Nelson County, which is an eastern neighbor of Rockbridge County.

I have found no additional information about Jane Hunt and her parents since my original version of this appendix (written in 204), so I will copy what I wrote then here: . “Although Aunt Blanche said Louisa’s mother was Nancy Hunt, the marriage records, census records, and her tombstone identify her as Jane Hunt. Maybe she was Nancy Jane.

“Jane Hunt was born on either 8 or 18 April 1807 in Nelson County, Virginia. Her parentage is uncertain. According to the Dilla Thacker Family Book, sent to me by distant cousin Butch Willard in July 2004, Jane was the daughter of a Rebecca Hunt who married a man also named Hunt. Rebecca was born in 1780 in Fluvanna County, Virginia to John and Ann Hunt. …

“Dilla and Jane Thacker and Rebecca Hunt are buried in the Johnson Cemetery, Putnam County, WV. Rebecca was a centenarian-she died on 7 March 1880. Listed immediately above Rebecca’s name is A. L. Thacker, a son of Dilla and Jane. The Putnam County Cemeteries, pub 1990 by The Upper Vandalia Historical Society, refers to Rebecca as the “Grandmother of the above.” So it appears Rebecca is the mother of Jane Hunt Thacker.

“The 1820 census for Fluvanna County has both a Rebecca Hunt and a John Hunt listed as heads of families. They are listed on same census page: Rebecca first, then several names later, John. Rebecca’s household consisted of two people, a female between 10 and 16, and a female between 26 and 45. John’s household consisted of a male and a female over 45 (presumably John & wife), a female 10 to 16, and a male under 10. One interpretation of this data is that Rebecca was a widowed single parent by 1820-Jane would have been 13 years old in that year. John may have been Rebecca’s father or even a brother-the age ranges permit both interpretations.

“The 1830 census for Fluvanna County reflects only John Hunt. I think Rebecca was already living with her daughter and son-in-law. (Dilla married Jane in Fluvanna County on 22 November 1827.) The 1840 census for Nelson County certainly indicates she was living with them by that year-a female between 60 and 70 was listed as a member of Dilla’s household.”

Dilla and Jane Hunt Thacker had eight children born between 1828 and 1846. Six were daughters, with our ancestor Louisa Jane, born in Nelson County, Virginia on 3 Jan 1830.
