Holbert T. Hunt spent his early years in Washington County, Tennessee. He was the 5th born child to his father's 1st marriage. His mother died when he was about 5 years old. His father remarried and had 5 more children. In total, he had 7 brothers and 3 sisters. They moved to Kentucky during his later childhood, first to Monroe County, before settling in Allen County. This is where Holbert met his future wife, Nancy Jane Wright. The Hunt's were close neighbors to the Wright family.
Nancy Wright was the 6th born child, with 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Her father was from Virginia and had married after moving to Kentucky. Several years before Nancy was born, her father purchased 60 acres in Allen County for $110. The property was used for farming and was located "on the waters of the middle fork of Drakes Creek". Her father was listed as deaf & dumb on all census records.
At age 21, Holbert Hunt married Nancy Wright. They initially lived in Allen County after marriage, where their two oldest children were born, then later moved to the Brownsville area of Edmonson County. They had at least 14 children, but some sources suggest as many as 18 children. Most of their children attended school, but not all learned to read and write. It was typical for that region and time period to have a 6th grade education. Holbert learned to read later in life, but his wife Nancy did not.
Holbert and Nancy continued to live in the Edmonson area throughout their 49 years of marriage. As the children married, many settled on farms in the same area as their parents. Nancy lived to the age of 67. The widowed Holbert lived with the family of his youngest son. Holbert lived to age 72, and died 3 years after his wife. They are both buried at Crandels/Crammels Chapel Cemetery in Bowling Green.
