Biography

Jonathan HUNT was born circa 1708 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut the son of Thomas Hunt and Mary Verde[1]. Note that the Connecticut Town Birth Record only shows he was the son of Thomas and Mary with no date of birth shown. The approximate 1708 date of birth is based on the age of his wife and date of marriage. No precise date of birth has been found. Find A Grave shows 1706 which is also an approximation.

The town of Lebanon which had its origins with the settlers from Norwich, was incorporated by the General Assembly of the Connecticut Colony on October 10, 1700. Lebanon was originally and now part of New London County but was considered part of Windham County from 1726 to 1824. Connecticut’s war effort during the Revolutionary War was directed from the War Office located in the city of Lebanon.

Jonathan on 24 May 1732 at Lebanon, CT married Ruth Cushman[2] (9 Jan 1708 Lebanon, Connecticut - 5 May 1799 Canaan, Columbia, New York), daughter of Thomas Cushman (1670 Plymouth, MA – 9 Jan 1727 Lebanon, CT) and Sarah Strong (15 Nov 1674 Northampton, MA – 25 Dec 1726 Lebanon, CT).

Ruth Cushman was the granddaughter of Elder Thomas Cushman (1608 – 1691) and Mary Allerton (1616 – 1699) - last surviving Mayflower passenger[3].

Ruth Cushman Hunt joined the Goshen Congregational Church on 7 Apr 1734 from Lebanon’s First Church. Jonathan and Ruth’s children are listed as being baptized at the Goshen Congregational Church. The church issued a warning to Jonathan in 1771 due to nonattendance. In a report given to the church, Jonathan objected to the greatness of the salary given to the minister and also had objections to "delivering the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven to the minister". In 1773, he was withdrawn from membership. A similar warning was issued to Ruth in 1783.

Jonathan and Ruth lived in Lebanon as their children were born but sometime prior to 1788, they along with their son Luther plus their youngest daughter Theodora and her husband Abram Warner, moved to Columbia County, New York. Other of their children moved to Vermont. Two of their children stayed in CT. The only records found to date for Jonathan and Ruth show them either in Lebanon, Connecticut or Columbia County, New York. Probate of Jonathan’s will identifies him as “formerly of Lebanon”. Jonathan’s will was written on 2 Nov 1779 In Lebanon, Windham, CT naming his son Jonathan Executor and dividing his land with half going to Jonathan and the remaining divided between sons Luther and Jasper. An addition was added 2 Oct 1783 in which he gave 6 acres of land to his wife Ruth and her heirs.

Death

Jonathan died about 1788 as is dated on his tombstone inscription and is buried in a cemetery near Austerlitz, Columbia, New York[5]. Columbia County is located in eastern part of New York State and borders the states of Massachusetts and Connecticut on the east.

Further search revealed the graveyard listing originally recorded by L. Hasbrouck von Sahler in a publication of the New York Genealogical & Biographical Society. Based on analysis of the overall evidence, the writer concluded that Jonathan, his wife Ruth and their daughter-in-law Abigail Brainerd (first wife of son Luther Hunt) were originally buried in this cemetery although it is not certain whether or not their remains were removed at a later period.
