Biography

The name of the wife of Robert Welles is known from the Chancery suit brought by her grandson John Welles to recover land in Burmington, Worchester, England. Her name was given as Alice with no clue given as to her LNAB or parentage.[1][2]
They had two known sons, Robert and Thomas; however, it is likely they had several more.
Alice was last known living in November 1615 when the Final Concord was made settling property on their son Thomas Welles.[3][4][5]

Birth

Born: Say 1645.
The date is rough estimate to make her birth date approximately match that of her husband. She may have been born later given the estimated birth dates of her children and grandchildren.

Marriage and Children

Married: Robert Welles.
Children:
  1. Robert Welles. Born say 1580. Named as eldest son in the 1548-1550 Chancery suit. He was buried on 21 June 1627.
  2. Thomas Welles. Born say 1590. He married in 1615 Alice Tomes when land was settled on him by his father in consideration of his marriage. He immigrated to New England in 1635. Thomas Welles died on 14 January 1659/60 at Wethersfield, Connecticut.[6]

Death

Died: After November 1615.
Date of Final Concord was made settling property on their son Thomas Welles.[7]

Research Notes

Last Name At Birth: This profile previously called her Alice Hunt, daughter of Thomas Hunt of Astley, Shropshire, England and his wife Agnes. No evidence has been found to support this, and it is extremely unlikely that she would have come from Shropshire.
Final Concord of 1615 Fine:
Final Concord made in Michaelmas Term, 13 James I (2-25 November 1615] between Thomas Kecke and Joseph Phelps, querents, and Robert Wells, Sr. and Alice, his wife, Robert Wells, Jr., and Joan, his wife, and Thomas Wells, deforciants, concerning one messuage, one cottage, two gardens, two orchards, seventy acres of land, six acres of meadow, forty acres of pasture, and six acres of furze, heath, and common pasture, in Burmington, co. Warwick, with warranty against Robert, Robert, and Thomas, their heirs and assigns. (Feet of Fines, Warwickshire, Michaelmas Term, 13 James I, 366).

Does anyone have a reliable source for her last name being Hunt? If not, based on reliable sources that say her last name was unknown, her name will be changed to Alice Unknown and the current uncertain parents disconnected.

Hunt-19818 and Hunt-798 are not ready to be merged because: Last name at birth needs to be ascertained and sourced before a merge.

Hunt-19818 and Hunt-798 appear to represent the same person because: To clear duplicate that I adopted in my lineage, which will also add sources. There appear to be marriage records for Hunt and Stowbridge but need to review if Agnes is the proper spouse and mother of the children. thanks for your assistance

I see no sources for her last name at birth or parentage. In both sources, she is shown as Alice ______. Before the profiles can be merged her last name needs to be ascertained, and sourced.

A reliable source is needed showing her parentage and last name at birth

So on Family Search the profile for Alice Hunt ( https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LTZS-BZ3 ) shows her as married to Robert Welles Sr. and having six children.

Then it also shows here married to a John Wells and having one son named Thomas Wells (1566-1620) (Thomas Wells: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/LZKN-1Y5).

I think that may be a "bad connection" as I don't see any comments that says she was married to a John Wells (1529-1572).

However I found Thomas Wells here in WikiTree at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Wells-5687 and his profile here has him listed as married to a Joanna Barber which does match one of his wives listed on the Family Search profile. But the key is that the WikiTree profile list the parents of Thomas Wells as Robert Welles Sr (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Welles-40).

In conclusion, the questions remains, who are the correct parents of Thomas Wells (1566-1620) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Wells-5687?

It seems like maybe this Thomas Wells (1566-1620) may be confused with Thomas Welles (abt. 1590 - 1660) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Welles-29 who was the son of Robert Welles Sr and Alice (Hunt) Welles.

If so possibly Welles-5687 should be disconnected from Welles-40 as his father?

The marriage year seems to be way off; children were born when she was about 17, but not married to Robert for 30 more years (?).

More research required into this profile, which is likely a conflation of multiple people

Jane (Wells) Baldwin was born 19 years before her parents were married. It is unlikely the Alices (Hunt) (Welles and Robert Welles Sr are her parents.

With the children who actually have birth locations attached to them, you have these parents going from Warwickshire (where they were born) to Berkshire (George attached only to Alice) to Worcestershire (Walter attached only to Alice) to Buckinghamshire to Warwickshire to Essex (Mary attached to Robert only) to Warwickshire, where they died. I seriously don't think that happened. I am guessing that most of these kids aren't theirs.

Quality sources I have looked at for Robert Welles list his wife's name as Alice _______. Do any PMs have any further details about her last name?

I'm looking for an Alice (Hunt) Welles or Wells with the same parents but I don't have any information on her being married to Robert Welles only to two different John Welles as per http://www.turlingtons.org/getperson.php?personID=P11392&tree=turlingtons1.

Are they the same person? This I believe is her husband John (Welles) Wells.

The profile of her son Thomas indicates her maiden name is not known. Can we find a better source (than an online tree) for her origins please?

Alice Hunt is supposedly an ancestress of mine, mother of my ancestor Thomas Welles. Was her husband truly Robert Welles? if so, why is this man not shown as the father of Thomas Welles and the other children of Alice Hunt?
Is it possible to get some help here with Alice (Hunt) Welles, wife of the Govonor of CT. According to this, she had 18 children, including one (Welles-3) when she was 68. She had 3 children named Thomas Welles: Welles-258, Welles-94, Welles-29

She had 3 children named Hugh T Welles: Welles-97, (1590-1636); Wells_Welles-2 (1590-1672) and Wells-123 (1595-1672). She had 3 children named Elizabeth (Welles-3, Welles-245 and Wells-1837) She had 2 children named Alice.
