Biography

Elizabeth "Lizzie" Lula Hunt was born in Cedartown, Polk County, Georgia to William Malon Hunt and Lettie Amanda Dooly Hunt. She moved with her family to Texas before 1900. The family appeared in the 1900 Federal Census of Justice Precinct 8, Grayson, Texas. [1] The 1900 census recorded her birthday as being in August 1879. Her older brother, Edd--"(Joseph E.)" and Katy--("Katie"), his wife, their two sons, "Olin" and "Charley" (Charles King) were living with his parents, "William Hunt", and "Tilly"--(Lettie, an error of transcription), and their children, "Lizzie", "James A.", and "Claud" in 1900. "Lizzie" was also recorded on the 1880 census. [2]

It appears she favored the name "Lula" as she got older. Lula shared her photograph as a young lady with her brother, Edd Hunt. His wife, Katy, marked her photograph with her name and indicated she was "J.E.'s" sister. [3] There is also a hand-colored portrait based on a photograph and another portrait among the family collection [3], and her page from Edd's autograph book, from about 1893. [4]

After the 1900 census, there are no known references in the family information to "Lizzie" Lula Hunt. However, Edd and Katy Hunt named their first daughter, Lula Maude Hunt on August 5, 1900. She was called Maude. Lula's brother, James Hunt and wife, Bessie, named their first daughter, Lula Eugene Hunt. Their Lula was born June 12, 1909. [A note from Donna Wilson Brown with the family photographs speculated Lula had tuberculosis, which may have been a factor in the family's choice to leave Georgia.] "William Hunt" and "Amanda Dooley Hunt" were identified as parents of "Joseph Eddy" Birth January 17, 1873; "Charley", Deceased; "Lula Elizabeth", Deceased; "Armstead", age and date not known, and "Claude" on a list made by Katy Hunt. Claude's name appears to have been written by a different person. [3],

The 1900 Census recorded Letty Hunt as being the mother of seven children, with five living in 1900. "Lizzie" was recorded on the 1900 census with the family, as well as the 1880 census. Charley Hunt's wedding photograph was marked, "J.E. Hunt's brother, Charlie Hunt and wife--this is the last picture of Charlie". This suggests William and Lettie had two more children who did not live to 1900. The children may have died soon after birth. It also suggests Charley's death occurred after the census date, even though he does not appear with the family. It's also possible an error was made by the enumerator. [No death and burial records are known for Charley, Lizzie/Lula, or the unknown children. William Malon's death and burial information is currently a mystery, also. --Allen Brown, January 2017]
