Biography

Elizabeth Huntley, daughter of John Huntley and Jane (Curtis? [unconfirmed]), was born probably not long before her baptism in the First Church of Roxbury, Massachusetts, on 27 10th month [December (not October)] 1657.*

  • That the secondary literature is apparently unanimous in presenting Elizabeth’s baptismal date as 27 October 1657 reflects an initial misinterpretation and subsequent repetitions. Roxbury baptismal records show that Elizabeth, along with her older brothers, Moses and Aaron (b. Boston in 1652 and 1654, respectively), was baptized on “Moneth 10 Day 27” (Record Book of First Religious Society in Roxbury, ca. 1630–1775, online at https://iiif.lib.harvard.edu/manifests/view/drs:51850152$236i [image 236]; [Sixth] Report of the Record Commissioners Containing the Roxbury Land and Church Records, 2nd ed. [Boston, 1884], 122). Old Style dating, customarily used by the churches of England and its colonies until 1752, specified March as the first month, with the new year beginning on the 25th. Accordingly, the last Roxbury baptismal record entered under the year 1657 is dated “Moneth 1 Day 21”; the first record under 1658 is dated "Moneth 1 Day 28." The tenth month was thus not October (as this section had previously presented Elizabeth's month of baptism) but December.

Elizabeth married on 24 May 1677, probably at her home of Lyme, Connecticut (recorded New London), the namesake son of John Lewis; her husband was accidentally killed on 8 May 1717 and buried the next day (Diary of Joshua Hempstead, of New London, Connecticut, 66). (The identity of the elder John Lewis's wife is unknown. His misidentification as the man of that name who immigrated in 1635 on the Hercules has sometimes caused the latter man's first wife, Sarah Mead, to be attributed to the subject of this paragraph.) Elizabeth died at the home of her daughter Elizabeth (Mrs. William) Latham in Groton, Connecticut, on 26 December 1741.[1]
