Biography

St James Manston

Florence Ellen Hurd, daughter of brushmaker Walter Hurd and his wife, Esther Anne Simpson was born in 1882. [1] She was baptised at St James Manston on 30 September 1884 on what was a very special family occasion as her brother, John Henry, and her cousin, George Frederick, were baptised at the same time.[2] There was a special closeness in the family as not only were the fathers brothers, but the mothers were sisters.

In 1891 she and her siblings, her older brother, Arthur, Walter and John, were living with their parents at Barwick-in-Elmet just outside Leeds [3] but by 1901 they'd moved back to Leeds where they owned an ironmongers at 229 Roundhay Rd. [4]

229 Roundhay Rd

On 7 June 1905 at St John, Roundhay Florence married Francis Hawkins,[5] son of Thomas Hawkins and his wife, Hannah Yates. Their dauaghter, Florence Ellen Hawkins, was baptised at St Aidan in Leeds on 7 January 1906. [6] Francis was an iron turner and they made their home in Harehills Rd in Leeds. [7]

When her parents retired from the business they moved to the seaside town of Bridlington where they had enjoyed holiday time. Walter Hurd died there 21 October 1912 at home at 4 Springfield Ave., of heart disease. [8]

Cousins

Francis and Florence did not have another child for 18 years after young Florence was born. Their son, Kenneth, was born in 1923.[9] According to her niece, Winnie Hurd, "My mother brought Ken up, he lived with us when we were young". No explanation was offered. [10] The photograph was taken in Bridlington; Esther Hurd on the beach with her grandchildren, Sandy and Winnie Hurd and Ken. It has been assumed that the lady holding Ken is Florence but only because it really doesn't look like Bertha Hurd, his aunt.

By the time that war broke out in 1939 Florence and Francis were living with Ken at 6 Cowpasture Rd, Ilkley and running a grocery business. Florence's mother, well into her eighties was living with them. [11]Esther died at Florence's home by then at 6 Belgrave Place, Ilkley, on 21 January 1946 aged 88 [12] and was buried in Walter's unmarked grave at Bridlington but not until the 1st May. [13]

Francis died in 1956. [14] Florence died towards the end of the following year aged 75. [15]

Research note

It seems that Florence carried the red/green colour blind gene as her son, Kenneth, was afflicted.
