Note

NEED TO CHECK: ADAMS COUNTY COURT RECORDS BOX D: HURD
1830 not located, probably not living, widow not located
1820 Adams Co OH, p 20: Caleb Hurd, 200001/31010

Only known census indicates he was born between 1780 and 1790.

June 1812 proprietors list for Huntington Township, Adams Co OH: Caleb Herd.
1811 enumeration list for Huntington Township, Adams Co OH: Caleb Herd.
1790-1810 Ohio censuses unavailable; his father not known;
Speculation: birth somewhere on the upper Ohio River might be confusing to descendants between PA and VA or even near MD. Actually even what is today Ohio was in 1780 part of "Illinois Co VA." Kentucky was also technically VA back then. See http://www.familyhistory101.com/maps/wv_cf.html. For example, Monangalia Co VA in 1786 bordered MD, PA and today's WV.
Herd or Hurd? The reasonable answer seems to be that at least two of the sons of this family definitely used Hurd.
Much of this family was in Pendleton Co KY in 1830. Page 68 (same page as Major Hudson) has John [R?]uord: 01122001/00203001.
DNA matches indicate he was from the Connecticut family.
Fairly close DNA match to Joseph Hurd of Onondaga Co NY and his son Samuel Hurd of Potter co PA.
The only early Herd in Early OH Census Records is Samuel Herd, Washington Co, Middleton Twp, 1800 census. Genforum has Samuel and Mary (--) Hurd of Monroe Co, see message #300. Samuel appears to be a contemporary of Caleb. They have 2 sons and 3 daughters. Son: John J. Hurd born March 10, 1819 married Sarah Gilmore, born Aug 5 1817.
And I have DNA shared matches with the descendants of this family.
There was a Thomas Herd in Champaign Co OH in 1806 and 1811.
Need to check: The Hurds of Boston. The sources are (1) A History and Genealogy of The Family of Hurd in the United States by Dena D. Hurd, 1910 (2) NEHGR, Vol. 131, 1977, pages 83-96, by Edward Hansen.
In 1880, Caleb's son Charles said father born in MD. The parentheses may indicate doubt since no one else on the page had parentheses.
There was a Wilm Hurd in 1790 in St Clair Twp, Allegheny Co PA: 00301/10101. This was along the Ohio River upstream from Adams County. Pennsylvania Archives, Ninth Series, 1793. January 18: Remitted fine of William Hurd imposed in Allegheny Co for fornication and bastardy. Pardoned Charlotte Barrington, convicted of Larceny in Philadelphia Co.
Genforum: Hurds of Pittsburgh PA, Posted by: Katherine Hlavac : Looking for information regarding John (Adam?) Hurd dob circa 1810, Pennsylvania. Married Mary Anne G(unable to read her last name from their son's death certificate) dob circa 1822 in Baden. They married prior to Mar 30 1849 when my Great Grandfather, John Henry Hurd, was born. They are seemingly buried in South Side Cemetary, unable to locate headstone for picture for my files. They are in the Wolfrum Plot below the Hurd Plot.
Is this man related? Genforum: Oscar B. Hord was born in 1829 in Mason Co KY. He was the son of Francis Triplett Hord and the grandson of Elias Hord. He served as Attorney General of Indiana 1862-64. He married Mary Josephine Perkins (born 1839 in Richmond Indiana) She was the daughter of Samuel Elliot Perkins, granddaughter of John Trumbull Perkins, ggdaughter of Caleb Perkins and Sarah Trumbull, gggdaughter of Joseph Perkins and Mary Bushnell.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Caleb by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Caleb:

Have you had DNA tested? I’m sorry I didn’t see your post sooner. Did Samuel Hurd leave records naming his family, like Bible, deeds, family traditions? I especially want to know his mother Deliverance’s maiden name.
I had my mom's DNA done on Ancestry several years ago. She is listed as [JH} on Ancestry's DNA for Joan Hurd. Her father Arthur Hurd was killed in an accident in 1946 when my mom was 13. His father John Lee Hurd died in his 40's in Cuba, N.Y. from Miller's Lung about the time my mom was born. She never knew him. John's father Grandville Hurd died in his 30's when John was very young. So John grew up with a step father. Grandville's father was Samuel Hurd Jr. Samuel and son Grandville are buried next to each other with no marker per Mr. Kenyon who managed the cemetery where they are buried. Both wive's remarried. Samuel Hurd Sr. and wife Charity Thompson are in that cemetery too. There are at least 50 Hurds buried there. We knew nothing beyond John Lee Hurd when I started researching mom's Hurd line over 25 years ago. I have since learned of the Samuel Hurd Jr. and Sr. connections and the claim Joseph Hurd was their father and grandfather. Two early Hurd researchers were working on this and passed before they completed and published their findings. They were Thad Hurd of Ohio and Myron Hurd of Genesee a descendant of Samuel Hurd. Thad was no known relation but had been helping others since the 1940's work on Hurd lines. On Wiki-tree I have learned of the claimed connection back to the immigrant brothers Adam and John Hurd in Stratford, Connecticut. I strongly disagreed with the removal of the previously claimed father John Hurd Sr. My comments are in the profile of one or both brothers. I site the early land maps as proof. Early records were lost. We do not have any info passed from early generations. I was excited to learn of Joseph Hurd being in the American Revolution. I wish there was more documentation for him , his wife and children. Thad Hurd was not convinced of this generation but didn't live to publish his conclusions.
