Lyra Arnelle Hurd was born in 1857 in Illinois, the daughter of Owen N. Hurd and Jerusha Powell. She married Charles P. Dutchess in 1874 in Cass, Indiana, and they had four children, born between 1876 and 1894. Her husband Charles was the son of Elijah (@1823- 1856) and Jane Dutchess.[1]

In 1880, the Dutchess family lived in Tipton, Cass, Indiana. The household included C.P. Dutchess, 30, born in New Jersey (father b. NY; mother b. NJ), a physician; his wife Lyra A., 23, b. Illinois (father b. NH; mother b. NY); their three children, all b. Indiana: Edna L., 4; Edith A., 2; and Owen A., 10 months, born in Aug. 1879; and Dr. Dutchess’ sister, Eliza J. Dutchess, 27, b. NJ, a seamstress.[3]
In 1900, the Dutchess family lived in Walton town, Tipton Township, Cass, Indiana. They owned their house without a mortgage. The household included Charles P. Dutchess, 50, born in New Jersey in Dec. 1850, a druggist; his wife of 26 years, Lyra A., 43, b. Illinois in March 1857, who had had four children, all living; their three children, all b. Indiana, Edith A., 23, b. Sept. 1877, a pharmaceutist; Owen A., 21, b. Aug. 1879, a grocery salesman; and Eugene C., 6, b. Nov. 1894.[4]
In 1908, their daughter Edith, 32, married Oscar A. Flanagan, 29, in Walton, Cass, Indiana.[5]
In 1910, the Dutchess family lived in Tipton, Cass, Indiana. The household included Charles P. Dutchess, 60, born in New Jersey (father b. NY; mother b. NJ), a self-employed drug store proprietor, who owned their house without a mortgage; his wife of 37 years (1st marriage for both), Lyra A., 52, b. IL (father b. NH; mother b. NY), who had had four children, all living; and their son, C. Eugene, 15, b. IN, in school.[6]
In 1920, Lyra A. Dutchess, 62, was widowed, and lived with her daughter Edna L. Bishop, 44, and her husband George W. Bishop, 48. They resided at 1106 State Street, Lafayette, Indiana. The Bishops owned the property with a mortgage. George Bishop was a cotton farmer. The Bishop’s six children, aged 7-23, all born in Indiana, and all in school, also lived with them.[7]
The house at 1106 State Street is a large, three-story brick house which was built in 1920, and is now a monastery. The property now has also a large guest house, and a chapel, for a total of over 9000sf. The property sits on the corner of State and Elliott streets, in the center of Lafayette, across the Wabash River from Purdue University.[8]
In 1930, Lyra lived with her daughter Edna Bishop at 2608 Central, Indianapolis, Indiana. The household included Edna L. Bishop, 54, who rented their house for $55 per month, a widow, who first married at age 17; her three daughters, aged 17-26, all born in Indiana; and her mother, Lyra Dutchess, 73, a widow. The elder two daughters had jobs (bookkeeper at a bank; and saleswoman in a dress shop).[9]
Lyra Armelle (Hurd) Dutchess (8 March 1857-17 Jan. 1931), died, aged 73, and is buried with her husband, Dr. Charles P. Dutchess (1849-1916) at Walton Cemetery, Walton, Indiana. Lyra’s husband enlisted at age 13 as a drummer boy/musician on 1 September 1862 in Co. H., 25th New Jersey Infantry. He was mustered out on 20 June 1863 at Beverly, New Jersey. [10]
