Pension / Bounty Land applications for Samuel's service were denied. An officer claimed many years after the fact that Samuel had deserted with items he was issued. In my reviews of his service I found nothing mentioned in any period documents. In fact one time he was discharged with 5 extra days pay as it was believed it would take him that many days to walk the 100 miles back home.

Notes;

My mom Joan Hurd Morgan Sumner and I met Mr. Kenyon the cemetery manager where Samuel , Charity and many of their Hurd descendants are buried in about 2000. He too was a descendant and had gotten information from a Genessee area Historian for us. She claims Samuel, Charity and some of his children had come into the area in the 1830's. A land holder offered them a large parcel of 100 or so acres if they could clear trees and create a road for this person which they did, After many years the road was abandoned but Samuel and family were deeded the land after completion of the road. It was my understanding that most or all of this took place on the New York side and they actually lived in Genessee, Allegany County, New York. The cemetery is just over the line into PA. The younger sons of Samuel claimed they had killed an estimated 1,000 or more deer over the years up until Samuel's death for food. After his death they found less interest in continuing.
Statement that Caleb Hurd of Kentucky had contact with a Samuel Hurd Jr. has been questioned but seems reasonable.
There was a Samuel Hurd in 1820 Monroe Co OH: 200001/20101.
Other Samuel Hurds were in NY (4), Ct (1), NH (2), and ME (1).
1830 Monroe Co OH: Mary Hurd: 01001/00210001; William Hurd: 11010001/31010001.
Samuel Herd, Washington Co, Middleton Twp, 1800 census. Genforum has Samuel and Mary (--) Hurd of Monroe Co OH. Samuel appears to be a contemporary of Caleb. They have 2 sons and 3 daughters. Son: John J. Hurd born March 10, 1819 married Sarah Gilmore, born Aug 5 1817.
There were several Hurds in Genesee Co NY, e.g., Elijah, born ca 1794, son of Robert Sr and Amy Welch.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:

I did not create this profile but was given management of it. Any help would be appreciated. I would like to find info about wife Charity Thompson and her parents. There is also controversy as to the birth places of Samuel and brother Sheldon. Samuel is believed to have been born in New York and Sheldon in Connecticut which I question. If their family had moved to New York before Samuel was born why would Sheldon been born later back in Connecticut? As this area was being populated counties were being split off from the original larger county. Making things seem to have happened in a different location today.

Thanks for the corrections to this line and Samuel's death location. I was going to contact the profile manager about it. I hope to one day add many more children and siblings and newer generations to this line. It is my mother's line as she descends from Samuel and Charity.The Find a Grave memorial for Samuel has his birth date as 12 Aug 1791 in Oneida County, N.Y. I did not create this memorial or the Find A Grave memorial. I know he enlisted into the militia during the war of 1812 from the Utica, N.Y. area. I always questioned the Onondaga County claims I have seen even when Thad Hurd was helping with this line? It seams the main Onondaga Library may have papers on this too as mentioned in Thad Hurd' letters and research before he passed. Onondaga may have been a parent / larger county during this time? I am not changing the birth info unless a collaborating source can be located. As to the denial of a pension for Samuel's service in the N.Y. Militia during the War of 1812 I have many questions of the review process and findings. I found two Samuel Hurds who had enlisted. I found no original/ period documents that support the later review / denial. I noticed the officers and other higher ranking militia were paid at much higher rates than the privates. Was this a cash cow for those people at the expense of the rest? I have another ancestor who was denied for his service in the N.Y. State Militia during this period too with no explanation given. He passed in 1854 without ever receiving anything. His widow and son continued to apply for a widow's pension until she passed in 1883. Nothing was ever awarded this family. She was a first cousin of Eliza Ballou Garfield who moved into the White House in 1880 with her son's family, President James Garfield. Apparently they didn't ask for any favors before President Garfield was assassinated.
