Biography

Georgianna was born before June 28, 1849. [1] She died before June 2, 1900. In the 1900 census, James is listed as a widow.[2]

The 1850 census, taken on September 20, 1850, lists Georgiana as one year old, so my estimate is that she was born before that date the previous year. This same census lists New Hampshire as her place of birth. This census did not list relationships between the household members so at this time it is only an assumption that she is the daughter of Albert Hussey and Elizabeth A. Whitehouse.[1]

The 1860 census, taken on June 28, 1860, lists Georgianna (with two "n"s) as 11 years old. Based on this she was probably born before this date in 1849. Then census taker's writing makes it appear that the last name is Hersey, but since Albert is again listed as a Tinsmith and born in Maine, and Elizabeth is also listed, I conclude this is the same family.[3]

The 1870 census, taken on July 9, 1870, lists Georgiana as Georgia. Her age of 22 is inconsistent with the previous two censuses. Her birth place as New Hampshire agrees with the previous two censuses. She is married to James and living in Chicago.[4] I am not sure when the family moved back to Massachusetts from Chicago, but it was before Mildred was born in July of 1874. I wonder if the famous fire in October of 1871 had anything to do with the family leaving the area.

The 1880 census, taken on June 5, 1880, again lists Georgiana as Georgia. Her age of 31 agrees with two of the previous three censuses. Her birth place agrees with the previous three censuses. The family has returned to Massachusetts.[5]
