Research Notes

  • [Roger A. Shepherd] Some LDS records have his name as "Husten", along with his father.

He was baptized at the Old Swedes Church in Wilmington, Delaware, on February 12, 1721, and was married there to Jane Elliott. After ten or so years, around 1765 or 1768, they moved to the Juanata Valley in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, to obtain cheap land for farming. His wife, Jane, died about 1769, leaving him with six children to care for. In 1771, he purchased land on the north side of the Juanata River. During this time, he married Abigail Brown, who was twenty-nine years his junior. She bore him nine children.

James was a slaveholder, owning one or two slaves at different times. He owned 350 acres of land. At age 60, he served as a private in the Revolutionary War, in the Cumberland County Pennsylvania Militia, 4th Battalion. His two oldest sons were also in service during this time. James was a Presbyterian Church leader, at one time a Constable and an Overseer of the Poor. He died December 3, 1789, in Mifflin County, of a hemorrhage following the extraction of a tooth. The Huston tract was in Derry Township (later Wayne, now Oliver Township), a part of Cumberland County until 1789 at which time Mifflin County was formed. It is not known where James was buried.

By 1790, two of Abigail's stepsons and and a stepdaughter had married. At this time she was living in a one story log cabin, 30 feet by 28 feet, with a kitchen and four windows on 200 acres of land. The family had three horses and three cows. After her husband died intestate it took many years to settle the estate. In 1792, Abigail, her children and stepchildren and families began moving to Nelson County, Kentucky, and settled near the town of Bloomfield. About 1825 she moved with her children to Washington County, Indiana. When her health began to fail, she accompanied her daughter, Abigail, to her daughter, Martha (Huston) Milroy's family in Carroll County, Indiana. Abigail's youngest child, Abigail, never married, but cared for her mother when she became blind. from "The Huston Family: Iowa Supplement" by Sgt. Major Richard Alan Huston, Des Moines, Iowa, 1981.
