Biography

Leroy W. Hutchins was born in 1889. After attending the Central Michigan Normal School, where he served as President of the Class of 1910, first Editor-in-Chief of The Chippewa yearbook, and first student editor of the Central Bulletin, he moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa. There he was Director of Manual Training for the Council Bluffs schools, and organized the first Boy Scout Council in that city in 1911.

He married his Central Michigan classmate, Mabel Reagh, in 1911. After a brief time in Iowa, they moved to New York City so that he could attend Columbia University's newly opened journalism school. Shortly thereafter, he responded to a job posting for a managing editor for a new magazine, "All Outdoors".

After a number of years, the magazine folded due to economic conditions and WWI paper rationing. After the closure of the magazine he was, successively, assistant to the president of the Pontiac Varnish Co., managing director of the "American Institute of the City of New York for the Encouragement of Science and Invention", and director of public relations of Swann Chemical Co. In 1931 he and H. A. Morse, Dr. W. H. Easton, and Dr. H. H. Sheldon, founded the firm of Sheldon, Morse, Hutchins and Easton, Inc., which provided "Sales Research, Advertising and Publicity Service for Industrial Products" at 191 West 10th St., New York City. He was also president of Hutchins & Graves, Inc., an advertising agency, and managing director of Safety Research Institute Inc. He was a member of The Chemists' Club, the American Public Health Association, the New York chapter of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the Trade Association Executives of New York, and the National Fire Protection Association.
