Research Notes

From: 'Decendants of John Hutchins;' from: Roots Web World Connec t Project. [1]. Joseph Hutchins (John (2), Mr. Enoch (1)) was born 1641 in/of Haverhill, Essex, Mass., an d died 19 Apr 1689 in Haverhill, Essex, Mass. He married Johanah Corliss 29 Dec 1669 in Have rhill, Essex, Massachusetts, daughter of George Gorlis and Joanna Davis. She was born 28 Apr 1650 in Haverhill, Essex Co., Mass, and died 29 Oct 1734 in Haverhill, Essex, Mass. There seems to be some confusion whether the Joseph Hutchins was actually the second child of John Hutchins named Joseph. Jack Hutchins lists a Joseph Hutchins born in 1640 who died young. William Cutter in "Genealogical and Family History of Northern New York" indicates just one Joseph who was born in 1640. I tend to believe Jack Hutchins as his work is more current and much more extensive. Joseph had a house in Haverhill in 1675. His name appears on a petition in 1683 objecting to building a new meeting house on the old site. Was this because he his father had contributed so much to the building of the old meeting house? CHILDREN:

  1. John Hutchins, born 5 May 1671 in Bradford, Essex Co. Massachusetts; died 23 Jan 1737/3 8 in Boston, Sussex, Mass.
  2. Johannah Hutchins, born 27 Sep 1673 in Haverhill, Essex, Mass; died 5 Feb 1676/77 in Haverhill, Essex, Mass.
  3. Frances Hutchins, born 7 Jun 1676 in Haverhill, Essex, Mass; died 5 Apr in Haverhill, Mass.
  4. Mary Hutchins, born 9 May 1679 in Haverhill, Essex, Mass; died 29 Oct 1734.
  5. Andrew Hutchins, born 22 May 1681 in Haverhill, Essex, Mass; died 3 Jun 1681 in Haverhill , Essex, Mass.
  6. Samuel Hutchins, born 22 Aug 1682 in Haverhill, Essex, Mass; died 15 May 1778 in Norwich , CT.
  7. Joseph Hutchins, born 29 May 1689 in Haverhill, Essex, Mass; died 1759 in Haverhill, Essex, Mass.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

Hutchins-2662 and Hutchins-43 appear to represent the same person because: Names of spouse, daughter, and son-in-law are identical and the dates are similar. Hutchins-2662 is unsourced and its dates are uncertain. It's possible but unlikely that Joseph Hutchins -2662 lived to be 100 years old. His wife and daughter are also duplicates.

Hutchins-253 and Hutchins-43 appear to represent the same person because: Now that the incorrect father has been removed from this profile, time to merge these. Still sorting out the rest!

This Joseph Hutchins is actually son of Hutchins-900, whose other children were Elizabeth, William, Joseph (died young?), Samuel, and Love. The other John (or Enoch?) Hutchins of Haverhill was probably a cousin of Hutchins-900, which would perhaps account for duplicate names of many children; this Joseph, though, had no siblings named Francis, Enoch, Thomas, Hugh, David or Daniel. He and his wife are named in Frances Alcocke's 1694 will, along with the other offspring of Hutchins-900.

If I read it correctly, Jack Hutchins's "Descendents of John Hutchins of Newbury & Haverill", believes the following is a correct genealogy. There seems to be some WikiTree mixing of the Newbury/Haverill Hutchins's and the Kittery Maine Hutchins's (not too surprising, a John Hutchins (presumably related) assisted Enoch in moving to New Hamphshire).

John HUTCHINS-562 (Newbury/Haverill, MA) b 1604 (Not Enoch HUTCHINS-136), Father of:

Joseph HUTCHINs-43 & HUTCHINS-253 (Newbury/Haverill, MA) b. 1641 Father of:

Samuel HUTCHINS-360 (Sr) (Norwich CT, not Kittery) b.1682, Father of:

Rev. Samuel HUTCHINS-916 (Jr) (Haverill, not Kittery)b. 1716, Father of:

Samuel HUTCHINS-1309 b.1765
