Ireland Native
Sarah (Hutchinson) Minchin was born in Ireland.

Sarah was born in 1822. She was the daughter of William Hutchinson and Sarah Birch.

Her mother probably died when she was young. Her father remarried, in 1832.

Upon the death of her father in 1842, she became the mistress of Rockforest Estate. At a dance at Ffrankfort Castle, Sarah met Edward Corker Minchin from nearby Greenhills. They married in 1845:

MARRIAGES
March 26, in St. Peter’s Church, Edward Corker Minchin, Esq., eldest son of the Rev. Wm. Minchin, of Green Hills, county Tipperary, to Sarah Anne, eldest daughter and heiress of the late Wm. Henry Hutchinson, Esq., of Rockforest, County Tipperary.[1]

They went on to have three children in the next three years; William Frederick Paul, John "Jack" Birch and Rebecca.

After the sale of Rockforest Estate in the Encumbered Estates' Court in 1852, Sarah and Edward emigrated to New Zealand with their three children on the ship "Stately", arriving firstly in Wellington, then Nelson, then Lyttleton, Canterbury, NZ in February 1853 aboard the Schooner Mary.

Her Husband Edward was a pioneer in the sheep farming industry, and before long the family became very wealthy.

Edward moved the family into the growing town of Christchurch. Like so many other pioneer wives, Sarah put away her sheltered life at Rockforest, where she had been surrounded by servants. Sarah was a woman of sweet and cultured mind who bore the trials of her life with great patience. In the early years, she made the harsh transition, mastering all housewifely duties. She made clothes for the whole family and also their boots and shoes. She visited the poor families round her home and made scrapbooks for the little children. On some difficult days, did she ever remember that she was a direct descendent of King Edward I? Probably not.

The family subsequently moved to Woodburn, Christchurch where Edward built a very comfortable home, a suitable reward for the hard working Sarah. Her thoughts were constantly with her dearly loved son John who had moved far away to Bolivia and the difficulty of getting letters from him kept her uneasy. Sarah took a great interest in her husband's family the Minchins and kept up a correspondence with many of them, helping to keep them interested in one another.

Sarah and Edward took many business trips back to Britain, but she was a terribly bad sailor and on one voyage nearly lost her life from seasickness. The Captain of the sailing ship they were on offered to put her ashore on an island they were passing.

On 5 December 1872 her only daughter Rebecca married Johnstone Thomas Stoney in County Tipperary, Ireland, whom she had met on one of the family's trips back to the home country. Sadly she was to die in March 1875 at the age of about 27, after contracting scarlet fever, leaving an infant daughter, also named Rebecca.

England and Wales Census, 1881: Living with her husband in Bayshill Terrace, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. Also in the household was her granddaughter Rebecca Stoney and her husband's niece Clementina Minchin. Sarah was aged 58.

By 1890 her health was failing, she was finding much difficulty in rising up from a sitting position. Edward purchased the Old Manor House of the Grange at Stanley, near Gloucester, England but when Sarah became paralysed, they returned to Emmel Castle and stayed with son in law Johnstone Thomas Stoney and his second wife Arabella. She was wheeled about the grounds in a bath chair. Sarah passed away on 16 August 1890 at the age of about 68.
