HUTCHINSON, Matthew
Born Yorkshire 1824, carpenter, migrated 1854 with his family. Mining in Hiscocks-Magpie area. Child and wife Anne died soon after, and he married Sarah Wells of Magpie in 1859, and selected land at Hiscocks, where he had an orchard. Mignon Preston's family history of the Wells family, Of All the Mad Pursuits, has much information.
Death date on another site is June 7, 1908
Matthew had 2 children with Anne. Matthew's ancestors were substantial land owners in the late 1600s, but his grandfather, William, was the younger son of a younger son. Matthew's great-grandfather, Joseph, bequeathed most of his land and his church pew, to his older son. Matthew's grandfather, William, inherited a smaller property in Chapeltown.
William was a manufacturer of coloured cloth. Hutchinson's Fields is a stretch of land in West Riding near Leeds.
Matthew's second marriage certificate stated that he had taken his mother's name and gave his parentage.
