Biography

Ralph was born 1630 in Northhamptonshire, England, died Oct 24, 1703 in Northhampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. [1][2] He married Alice August 8 1656 Boston, Massachusetts.
Alice was born abt. 1630 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, died Jan. 10, 1714 in Northhampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, Alice was the widow of Francis Bennett of Boston, Massachusetts, They were married in 1649.

Ralph Hutchinson and sons apparently acquired land at Northfield, Massachusetts, in 1673 (his stepson James Bennett was killed there when Indians destroyed the town in 1676). During King Philip's War, on 28 October 1675, Indians entered Northampton on South Street, pursuing the fleeing settlers into town, and burning houses and barns on the southern edge of town. Ralph Hutchinson (along with Enos Kingsley, Preserved Clapp, and William Smead) lost everything, including houses and contents, barns, crops and food. These and other settlers were granted small lots (60 rods of land each) within the palisades (stockade) on 01 January 1676. This was just enough land to build a house and barn, and Ralph's grant was on the west side of present-day King Street (between the brook and street). He never rebuilt on his old South Street homestead. Since Northfield had not yet been attacked, perhaps the Hutchinsons lived there during the winter of 1675/76 while Ralph built on his new grant of land. The Freeman's List of 1678 should be consulted to determine Ralph's place of residence at that time. He died at Northampton, Massachusetts, on 24 October 1703, and his widow Alice died there on 18 January 1714. They were buried in the Old Northampton Cemetery but their graves are unmarked. It is not known if Ralph or his wife left wills or any other probate records.
