Biography

Daniel Dugan Hutton was the second child and first son of Arnold and Cynthia Hutton, born in Missouri in 1828. He grew up with an older sister, Rebecca, and at least 5 younger siblings (5 lived to adulthood). Sometime in 1847 or early 1848, Daniel married the daughter of Simeon Parsons, who, with her family, had arrived in Missouri sometime in the past ten years. Daniel's new wife, whose first name is unknown, gave birth to daughter Rebecca Ann Jane in 1848, but unfortunately died before 1850, potentially as a result of the birth.

Daniel left Rebecca Ann Jane in Missouri with her grandfather, Simeon, and his younger wife, who had recently given birth and may still have been nursing, and appears to have departed immediately for California, probably part of the Gold Rush. He moved from Butte County to Sonoma, appearing on both censuses in 1850, and his family joined him there, eventually moving to York and the Point Arena in Mendocino County, where they were in the forestry trade. At some point during this, Daniel seems to have married a woman named Harriet; in 1860 he was recorded on the census living with a Henry Holmes and James McVicar, of Pennsylvania and Kentucky respectively, and a Harriet Hutton (aged 30, born MO), John Hutton (age 5) and Lucy Hutton (age 2). These seem to represent wife and children of Daniel.

However, by 1870, he seems to have married again, to an Elizabeth, and no John nor Lucy appear in his household. Daniel had 8 more children by that year, though it's unclear how many were birthed by Elizabeth (some appear too old to have been born within her fertile years), and two more daughters after that census and before his death in 1872.
