• Tax and Exoneration Lists for 1779 through 1782 list Jacob Huyett of Cumru as owning "1 bound servant" or "Svt Girl" (listed under property). "In rural areas, slaves generally worked as household servants or farmhands, and sometimes both depending on need." "During the Revolutionary War, Pennsylvania passed the Gradual Abolition Act (1780), the first such law in the new US. PA's law established as free children born to slave mothers after that date." Enslaved people born into slavery were freed at age 23. As the servant is no longer listed as property in 1783, it is assumed that (she?) was freed when reaching that age.
