Biography

Birth and Early life

Margaret Jane Hyatt was born on 26 September 1835 in Franklin County, Missouri, USA to John H. Hiatt (1813-1870) and Jane Ann Blair (1813-1896) (don't have proof of this yet).

Marriage and Family

Margaret married Elias Keeney in October 1850 in Holt County, Missouri. Elias had raced home from Oregon with his brother Jonathan and they made it in a record time of 66 days to marry his 15 year old hometown sweetheart.

Children of the Keeney-Hyatt Marriage

  1. John Keeney was born in about 1851 in Missouri, USA. He died in about 1851 before his parents went to Oregon.
  2. Eli J. Keeney was born on 8 November 1852 in Linn County, Oregon, USA. Eli married Mary Ann Swaggart (1856-1889 in about 1877 in Umatilla, Oregon. He died of tuberculosis on 24 July 1905 in Brownsville, Linn, Oregon, USA.
  3. Rebecca J. Keeney was born on 11 February 1854 in Linn County, Oregon, USA. Rebecca married George William Warmoth on 27 November 1872 in Linn County, Oregon. She died on 25 July 1887.
  4. Mary Emma Keeney was born on 10 December 1858. Emma is said to have had an unhappy childhood as she was kept at home to take care of the younger children and do all of the heavy work of the household. She married James John McHargue (1851-1932). Emma died on 17 August 1927 in Brownsville, Linn, Oregon, USA.
  5. John H. Keeney born in1859. He died in 1940 in Albany, Oregon, never having married.

She traveled with her husband on the Keeney Wagon Train from April 1851 when it left Missouri to for a distance of 2000 miles to reach their new home in Oregon. It took about six months to get to Oregon and they arrived in the early fall.

Death and Burial

Margaret died of tuberculosis at the age of 24 on 9 December 1859 in Linn County, Oregon. She left her husband with four children.

Buried at Brownsville Pioneer Cemetery, Brownsville, Linn, Oregon.
