Biography
Ruth Hyde was born in 1844 in Hayfield, Glossop parish, Derbyshire, England to Mary Hyde. Her birth was registered in Hayfield in the third quarter of the year, with no mother's maiden name (indicating an unmarried mother).[1]
Ruth seems to have been raised by her grandparents, James Hyde and Mary. She was listed as their daughter on the 1851 census but as their granddaughter in 1861 - on her marriage record she listed James Hyde as her father.
In 1851 Ruth Hyde (age 6, Scholar) lived in Whitfield, Derbyshire with her [grand]father James (54, Piecer Cotton), [grand]mother Mary (52), aunt [mother] Mary (32, Weaver Cotton), and sister Esther (9, Heald Bottomer), as well as four lodgers: Geor Slater (31, Spinner Cotton), Thomas Slater (12, Piecer Cotton), Mary Slater (10, Scholar), and Hanh Bramhall (25, Weaver Cotton).[2]
In 1861 Ruth Hayd [Hyde] (age 16, Cotton Weaver) lived at Lower Whitfield in Whitfield with her grandfather James (64, Formerly Cotton Spinner), grandmother Mary (62), and sister Esther (19, Cotton Weaver).[3]
Ruth Hyde (age 20 [29], daughter of James Hyde) and James Potts (age 20, son of John Potts) were married on 7 Apr 1873 in Castle Hall, Cheshire.[4] The marriage was registered in Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire in the second quarter of the year.[5]
Note: from her marriage record onwards, Ruth's age is given as a few years younger than it should be - perhaps she didn't want it known that she was a decade older than her husband.
In 1881 Ruth Potts (age 34 [~37]) lived at Jackson st in Ashton Under Lyne with her husband James (27, Grinder at Cotton Mill) and three sons: Arthur (6, Scholar), Alfred (1), and Jno Hy Hyde (16, Piecer Cotton).[6]
In 1891 Ruth Lotts [Potts] (age 44 [~47]) lived at Alexandra Road in Ashton Under Lyne with her husband James (37, Labourer Cotton Mill) and four children: Arthur (16, Cotton Piecer), Alfred (11, Scholar), Elizabeth (6, Scholar), and Robert (5, Scholar).[7]
In 1901 Ruth Potts (age 53 [~57]) lived at Turner Street in Ashton Under Lyne with her husband James (47, Cotton Mixer Cotton Mill) and three children: Alfred (20, Cotton Spinning Piecer), Elizabeth (16, Railway Company's Servant Not Domestic), and Robert (15, Cotton Spinning Piecer).[8]
Ruth Potts passed away in 1907, aged 60 [~63] years. Her death was registered in Ashton Under Lyne in the second quarter of the year.[9] Ruth Potts, of 23 Turner St in Ashton, was buried on 25 Apr 1907 at Christ Church in Ashton Under Lyne.[10]
