Biography

William was born in 1814. He died in 1884 at the age of 70.

William was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Louisiana starting 4/1/1865 to 1869.

Parents: Samuel Hyman 1778 - 1829 and Ann Gray (Bryan) Hyman 1786 - 1864.

Spouse: Hermenegilda Dolores (Gonzales) Hyman 1833 - 1912. Findagrave #94261058

Dictionary of Louisiana Biography, page 422: "Hyman, William Bryan, Attorney, Jurist. Born, Martin County, North Carolina 4/30/1814. Son of Samuel Hyman and Ann Gray (Bryan) Hyman. Education: University of North Carolina, law degree, 1839. Removed to Alexandria, Louisiana, established law practice. Married Hermenegildo Dolores Gonzales of Rapides Parish. Five children, among them were Thomas and Gertrude, who married William Mithoff. Opposed secession and was in and out of trouble with Confederate authorities during much of the Civil War. In 3/1865, Unionist Governor J. Madison Wells, a friend of Hyman's from Alexandria, appointed Hyman Chief Justice of Louisiana's Supreme Court, a post he retained until 11/1868. Therafter, Judge of Jefferson Parish, 1871 - 1880. Judge W.B. Hyman died at New Orleans, 8/9/1884. Interred at Carrollton Cemetery."

Obituary in the Goldsboro Messenger (Goldsboro, North Carolina) 8/18/1884: "Hon. William B. Hyman, a native of Martin County, North Carolina, died near Camp Parapet, Louisiana, on Saturday, the 9th inst., aged 70. He was Chief Justice of the State in 1865, and served 4 years."
