Biography

Margaret Tredwell Iredell was born 1833 in Raleigh, Wake County, NC, to NC Governor and U.S. Senator, James Iredell Jr. and his wife, Frances Johnston Tredwell.

Margaret was raised in Raleigh, the capital city, where her family had located soon after birth as her father's political career started to rise.

Margaret was 20 years old when her father died in 1853, and she remained in Raleigh with her widowed mother until war's end. During the war, she lost 2 of her 3 brothers that fought with the Confederacy. Brother, Capt. Campbell Tredwell Iredell was killed at Gettysburg in 1863; and Maj. James Johnston Iredell was killed at the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse on May 10, 1864. She would lose her mother in October, 1865; and a third brother, Dr. Samuel Tredwell Iredell died in November 1865. Her youngest brother, Capt. Cadwallader Jones Iredell, was he only brother to survive the war.

On November 6, 1872, the 39-year old became the 2nd wife of 53-year old widower and CSA veteran, Hon. William Marcus Shipp, a Charlotte attorney and future Judge of the Superior Court of North Carolina. The widower had 5 children from his previous marriage to Kate Cameron, to whom Margaret became stepmother.

The couple would have 2 known children, both daughters: Frances Johnston Shipp (c. 1873), who died in infancy; and Mary Preston Shipp (1875-1969).

Margaret was widowed in 1890 when her husband of 18 years passed at age 71. She survived him 13 years, passing in 1903 at age 70.

James J. Iredell Estate Papers, 1864[4]
Personally appeared before me Charles E. Johnson who maketh oath that since the year 1853 Mrs. Frances J. Iredell was possessed of an estate for life of certain lots in the city of Raleigh, known in the plan of said City as lots No. 216 and 232. That her son James J Iredell owned the (several?) of said lots in fee simple. That said lots were so conveyed to Mrs. Frances J. Iredell and James J. Iredell by their kinsman James C. Johnston. That James J. Iredell entered the Confederate Army in the latter part of the year 1861 or first part of 1862. That subsequent thereto, viz. in the latter part of May 1863, Mr. James C. Johnston communicated with James J. Iredell to the effect that having entered the Army, his life was in constant danger; that he owed debts; that if he should be killed, his two unmarried sisters Helen B. and Margaret T. Iredell would be left without a home, after the death of their mother and offered to buy his reversionary interest in said lots, for the benefit of said unmarried sisters, jointly and for the one shall survive the other. To this proposition the said James J. Iredell acceded. That he executed a power of attorney, dated June 27th 1863, from the army of Northern Virginia, where the said James J. Iredell then was with his command, to this affiant, authorising him to convet said lots according to the proposition of the said James C. Johnston. That thereupon this affiant requested Messrs. George W. Mordecai and John H. Bryan, men of high business standing in the community, to value the reversionary interest of the said James J. iredell, which they did, assessing the same at the sum of ($9850); that he then, as attorney of the said James J. Iredell, executed a deed for said property, to the said Helen B. and Margaret T. Iredell, in accordance with the powers vested in him by the said power of attorney, which deed is dated Sept. 7th 1863 and is duly registered in the Registers Office of the county of Wake, and received the said sum of $9,850 from one Wm. R. Richardson, then a broker, and the financial agent of the said James C. Johnston, in the city of Raleigh. That owing to some inadvertance or neglect the said power of attorney was not registered as it should have been, and in the spring of 1865, when the Federal army occupied this City, was stolen from the office of this affiant, along with another valuable paper, the property of the affiant. - Chs. E. Johnson
