Biography

John was born about 1836. He was the son of Robert Ireland and Dinah Bloomfield.

He was baptised on 6 September 1836 at Diss, Norfolk[1].

At the age of 13 he emigrated from England to the Colony of Natal with his father, his stepmother Ann and four siblings Benjamin (11), Sarah (7), Abraham (2) and Mary Ann (1). They travelled on the ship King William, under master Benjamin Avery, departing from London and Plymouth on 20 October 1849 and arriving into Port Natal on 23 January 1850[2].

His brother Ocean Robert was born at sea on 4 November 1849. Sadly his father died on 27 November 1849 on board the ship.

He married Ada Constance Richards on 4 October 1860 at Pietermaritzburg, Colony of Natal[3].

They went on to have the following children:

  3. Edith Constance Ireland (b. 11 Jun 1864, d. 25 Jun 1864)

  5. Ebenezer Hobson Ireland (b. 26 Jun 1869)
  6. Albert Frederick Ireland (b. 19 Jun 1871, d. 14 Apr 1944)
  7. Alfred Henry Ireland (b. 4 Jan 1874)
  8. Herbert James Ireland (b. 31 Mar 1877)
  9. Winifred Sarah Ireland (b. 17 Aug 1879)
  10. Florence Ethel Ireland (b. 13 Jun 1881)
  11. Ruth Adela Ireland (b. 6 May 1885)
  12. Amy Esther Ireland (b. 19 Nov 1889)

His wife Ada died in 1895.

John passed away on 30 September 1898 at the age of 62[4]. Cause of death was recorded as Acute Rheumatism.
