Oilioll Molt, son of Dathi, son of Fiachra [1] Elswhere, Ailill Molt is recorded as the son of Nath Í and Ethne ingen Chonrach Cais. His paternal grandfather Fiachrae was a brother of Niall of the Nine Hostages. [2][3] (Ailill Molt is also found as "Ailill Wether;" both wether (English) and molt (Irish) being the word for a young male sheep)
0463 - beginning of the reign of Ailill Molt, son of Nath Í. [4] Olioll Molt can be found listed as monarch no: 129 in John O'Hart's Roll of the Monarchs of Ireland, beginning his time in power in the year 458; and following his father Dathi who is listed at no: 127 (and began his reign in 405) [5]
The 20 year reign of Oliol Molt was reasonably democratic, based on frequent consultation at Tara with the representatives of his people. [6]
His reign is most memorable for its violent ending in a fierce contest with the King of Leinster to extract the bórama tribute, a tax in cows traditionally due to the High Kings of Ireland. Olioll Molt fell in the battle of Ocha (Duma Aichir), in Meath; against Lughaidh, grandson of Niall Noigiallach, Niall the Great in whose family the crown continued with few interruptions until the dissolution of the monarchy. [7] [8] [9]
In 0482, the battle of Ochae was won by Lugaid son of Laegaire and by Muirchertach Mac Erca, in which Ailill Molt fell. [10] Elsewhere, this battle was recorded as "Ailill Wether, son of Dathi reigned twenty years and fell in the Battle of Ocha by Lugalid, son of Leogaire and Muredach son of Erc and by Fergus Wrymouth, son of Conall Cremthainne, and by Fiachra the Harsh, son of Coelbad, King of Dalriada and by Crimthann, son of Enna, King of Leinster." [11] [12]
